clarkete
21 minutes ago, Neil said: Cost to NHS has maybe gone up cos women smokers will now be in the mix. Women tended not to habitually smoke until about (I'm guessing the era) 1960-ish Definitely not that, the first link I quoted and referred to was 2015:- "Estimates suggest costs anywhere between £3 billion and £6 billion for NHS treatments in a given year. In the longer term the total cost might be lower, since some of those who die prematurely due to smoking might otherwise have gone on to cost the service even more money due to other health conditions. NHS treatment isn't the only cost to the government, which spends money on things like sweeping up cigarette butts and putting out fires caused by cigarettes. It also loses tax revenue from lost productivity when people are made ill by smoking. Conditions caused by smoking cost the NHS billions The cost of treating smokers in England was estimated at £2.7 billion in 2006. That was made up of £1.2 billion spent on hospital treatment, £600 million on consultations with GPs and practice nurses, and £900 million on GP prescriptions. That £2.7 billion would be worth about £3.2 billion today (adjusting using GDP deflators). Other research put it as high as £5.2 billion in 2005/06 (about £6.2 billion today). These studies suggest a range of between £3 and £6 billion costs to the NHS, but there's too much uncertainty in the estimates to rely on these bounds or place a more precise estimate between them." So a phenomenal increase in 9 years.

Yeah 100%, it's going to totally f**k us in a couple decades and as ever it will be the younger generations who get f**ked over the most. steviewevie
ok so what do you do about that elephant. We're not the only ones facing the aging population problem, it is happening across the developed world, and also beginning to happen across the developing world. When countries reach a certain level of wealth their populations start having fewer kids, because the need to have loads has gone and it just becomes a want, and most people seem to want to have just a few, if any. So you can chuck money at that to try and get people reproducing, removing cap on child benefits, spend more on child care etc but not sure will be enough because kids are hard work and people quite like child free freedoms it seems. So, it will just get worse and worse. I guess just keep increasing the pension age, and/or make state pensions and healthcare means tested, but that could be perceived as unfair and complicated and expensive. Or just keep putting up taxes to help pay for it, so you have a sh*t working life and then a sh*t old age. Or just get AI to sort it out. If you did take the time to look you would find that this is not the case and many politicians are not unpopular and have good positive scores using the method. but I suppose throw away comments are your thing and easy for you to do.
