before i recently moved that was my go-to place for lunch, it does a 'lunchbox' curry and rice everyday, a  lovely chicken or veggie curry (varies daily), with a heap of rice for less than a fiver(fantastic value)

having moved to the edge of the city, i'm missing places like this.

Hope you've settled in now Neil.

Now Reeves says won't increase VAT because Tories started to suggest she will. So another tax rise ruled out. What's left?

higher rate tax pensions relief is one that seems to keep coming up which I think will eventually go. Infact I think Reeves has suggested it previously.

Well I did say yesterday the media would grab Labour not mentioning VAT and attack with it..................... and behold they did and behold Labour are forced to react.

If/when they gain power they really need to work out how to not look quite so daft so often - the Abbott fiasco was so avoidable and yet here it is dominating the news when it did not ever need to be even a small issue.

Looks like the way both parties would increase taxes would be by just continuing to freeze income tax thresholds.

So again, no difference between them. The list of things they will both do is really quite long.

be careful about who impresses you. i can remember being impressed the first time i saw owen jones on tv. been feeling bad about that ever since. 😞

I think he has changed a lot though. When I first came across him he was doing good interviews with people of other political leanings. He has now just become an echo chamber commentator which I assume gets the most likes and retweets

Tories desperate for Labour to be seen as high tax party, Labour desperate to kill any of that. What actually happens when/if Labour get in is another matter...because sh*t happens.

you would hope there might be room in the Labour party for folk who don't impress either of you (or me for that matter)

Sadly, there appears to be virtually no limit to how right wing you can be to win Keir Stalin's blessing, but heaven help you you if you show any slight symptom of Socialism or are mildly critical of Israel.

I am so glad I live in a constituency where Labour have no chance of winning. I would hate to be in the position of having to vote for these craven Tory Lite reptiles to keep the Tories out.

If you read the previous page you would have seen me say how she has impressed me and how I think she would be a stronger voice in parliament for the labour left wing. However in 2024 if you want to be a labour mp you can’t go near anything on social media that talks about “Israel lobby” I think some of these people would be better off staying off social media as they lose all their common sense.

You will be disappointed when I tell you the SNP are not a left wing party either. They are a centre left party trying to build a coalition (including conservative voters) for independence. The deputy leader doesn’t believe gay people should be allowed to get married, so dont think the SNP are in any place to preach.

yeah definitely....or maybe just have someone else manage or vet your social media.

This Israel lobby thing, is that a tweet from The Daily Show? And Israel lobby is widely used, even if can be seen as problematic. If she was from the right side of the party this wouldn't have been an issue.

Just watched a clip of it, she looks genuinely shocked and upset. Maybe she should be Green candidate for same seat, split the vote and IDS can win another term,. Yay.

I'm actually more annoyed about this than Diane Abbott. I get why they want loyal MPs, doing this is hardly a new thing, happened under Corbyn, happened under Blair, but this seems a whole new level. One day this will bite them in the bum. There is so much loathing of Starmer on the left for what he is doing, and even further to the centre there is disquiet and unease, if he's like this now what is he going to be like in power? We live in a parliamentary party system, not a presedential system, and he is going to need that party to support him. When things go tits up, and they will, he is going to need their backing. As for voters yes they can afford to lose voters on the left or from various ethnic minorities because where these voters are, their coalition of support is now in places they need to win this election, but one day the Tories won't look such a bad prospect for a lot of these voters and are more volatile and willing to change support, and Labour could be looking at a similar situation to what the Tories are facing now, no one likes them.

I think social media is the big difference. In 1997 people there was no twitter or phones to record things. People probably said dodgy stuff and it just disappeared. I agree with your point about likes and retweets. I think people are probably just better off not using or just doing their own posts.

However candidates/MPs need to take responsibility. There are several left MPs who have showed more common sense with social media use.

Yes, they do..I'm sure many will be careful now...Big Brother and all that. I don't know anything about that Brighton bloke, but just feels wrong, with Abbott because she deserves better, and with Faiza Shaheen because she is bright, young and keen...and I think would have been a great addition to the PLP and who knows after that. Anyway, done now. Actually Abbott isn't done, more to play with that one...

Right, but the only people who matter are those that live in Hackney.

Jibbing Diane Abbott and Faiza Shaheen is not going to win votes in the red wall, its only going to lose them votes in those constituencies, alienate the CLPs and activists in those constituencies during an election campaign and potentially jeopardise winning their seats. Admittedly Shaheen’s is a marginal and you would think likely to be Labour if the national swing is even slightly replicated but its still in play, and if Abbott stands as an independent she could easily win.

And thats not to talk of the optics of a labour party in a mess.

More evidence if it were needed that the harrying of the left was never about winning, and all about twisting the knife, punishing them and ensuring the labour party remains a party committed to thatcher’s legacy for another generation.

for the sorts of lightweight labour voters that exist in the red wall, getting rid of Abbott would probably increase the labour vote, Abbott is not well-liked, because of stupid stuff she says (like in that letter).

I think very few of you average electorate will have the slightest clue who Faiza Shaheen is, nor have a strong view about it. Your right it could impact in the CLP, but I think she should take responsibility for using a bit of common sense.

I guess he means seats with high muslim populations? Other than that not sure this will make a jot of difference in the red wall, may actually gain labour some support.

Also...I have loads of sympathy for these deselected MPs, but there was some dodgy factional stuff going on under Corbyn too...really Labour needs to split.

The only way Labour and/or the Tories will split is under PR when being a 'broad church' is no longer of benefit to them.
