Avalon 2024

I'm listening to my Avalon playlist and Frank came on.  Immediately put a smile on my face and chair dancing while working on a boring report for work.  He's not someone I listen to much but when I do, he immediately cheers me up.  And really enjoyed his set at Bearded Theory far more than I even expected.  Looking forward to him at Strummerville on Thursday night as in 2019!

Just giving you an upvote, because it's a bit harsh you got downvoted for sharing a quote lol

I've done that too as (a) I absolutely detest downvoting and have never done so - if you vehemently disagree, have a conversation about it... - and (b) absolutely non-sensical to consider that someone merely sharing factual information to provide context for an ongoing discussion should receive a downvote!

@Neil - did you realise that @Alex DeLarge was simply relaying a previous quotation verbatim?

I'm old fashioned then and proud of it.  I find him very entertaining.

"To start with, most people don't seem to understand what the difference between left and right is. For example, the BNP are a hard left party. I consider myself a libertarian, I consider myself to be pretty right wing and I get sh*t for saying that out loud. I was thinking about it the other day, I was thinking about how, quite often, I do keep myself to myself on the subject because I can't be f**king bothered to have some guy look all shocked at me because I think socialism's retarded." (moonandbackmusic.com, December 2009)

"I do firmly believe that leftist politics lead to the misery of many, the crushing of the little guy and all that kind of thing. I mean, it's important for me to say that in public because I believe it strongly and that sometimes in life you've got to f**king put your foot down." (Source as above)

"I think, arguably, particularly with the signing of the Lisbon treaty it's actually the end of about 800 years of continuous parliamentary history. I think the people responsible for the signing of that f**king treaty without asking the people of Britain need to burn in f**king hell." (Source as above)

"Delving into political philosophy here, but I get very frustrated with people who publicly have issues with private companies and then have no problem at all with the state funding stuff. The bottom line is the British Film Council gets its money out of threat of violence towards citizens, which is why it's infinitely worse than money that comes from some fizzy drink. At the end of the day, I don't actually give a sh*t, but if you made me choose between those two methods I think that state funding is much more of a greater evil on society. Those are my politics … I've got no problem with using taxes to pay for essential things like defence or the basics of a healthcare system. But whether or not we're threatened with the removal of our liberty to pay for someone to make a film, I personally struggle with." (huckmagazine.com, March 2011)

Is this Frank Turner? What a load of absolute horse sh*t whoever it is.

I've never been able to listen to him after chatting to him outside a pub once and thinking what an insufferable c word.

The real damage was a great song though, as a student pissing life away it hit home, and his cover of dancing queen was good craic.

Isn't that the point of quotes, to show the things folks have said, for better or for worse?

Clearly the person quoting the statement may well be doing it as they are diametrically opposed to that view, but want to give others the opportunity to judge.

In this case if there were a later interview where he retracted or gave differing views, others could quote...as we do in discussions here 👍

Blimey Neil. Someone asked for a quote and I posted it. I don't care about the downvote (but thanks to those who have upvoted me) but this is a bit of an odd response to a fairly innocuous post.

Let's just be clear - I couldn't disagree more with Frank Turner's comments there.

Skindred were brilliant last year, can't recommend them enough. If it's true, according to the Clashfinder, they're headlining Saturday night, I would be tempted to see them again. IDLES would be the other draw that night who I've never seen, so would prob go to see them, but still Skindred, great booking for Avalon!

Other than that, would give Baby Queen, BC Camplight, the Go! Team (for the nos-hit), and Lulu (mega-nos-hit) a view if absolutely nothing else was on, but in general, it's a pass from me.

To be fair, he pretty much agrees with that assessment of what he wrote back then.

And since Boris got in he's been playing "Thatcher f**ked The Kids" fairly regularly again.

How many sets do we think Frank Turner will end up doing in total?

He managed 5 last time he played (in 2019) - Avalon, Strummerville, Greenpeace, BBC Introducing and the Stone Circle - only the first of which was billed when the full lineup initially came out.

He's also now going for a world record in May - 15 gigs (in different cities) in 24 hours.

I reckon somewhere, there's a man in his early 40s Googling "what's the most anybody has played at Glastonbury in the same year", and thinking about how to beat that....

Problem is it's probably Beans on Toast and they're mates so that'd be mean...

I get the hate for Frank T. His politics many years ago were informed by a privileged upbringing and naive. From his recent interviews etc. I suspect he now has better informed opinions. Regardless, he’s is still one of the hardest working and most entertaining live acts I’ve ever experienced. 14 times. I love his output and he always puts a shift in live, plus the Sleeping Souls are a great live band when present. Clashes willing I will be there for my 15th.

Back OT. I now have 15 acts at Avalon I’d like to see. That’s a record for a single stage. Of course I’ll miss most of them but…Bravo the booking team. And stop stealing my brain patterns.

It’s an excellent line-up. Acoustic is good too, between those and West Holts I’ve got more than enough without caring for much on the Pyramid, Other, Woodside or even the Park.

Yes I feel much the same.  Though am interested to see what Strummerville and Leftfield have to offer. Oh and Rimski's Yard which I loved last year. But I am already feeling I have enough to keep me happy.

Longtime Frank Turner fan here. I totally get why people dislike him. Sometimes his stuff can feel needlessly preachy and he comes from an extremely privileged background which some argue doesn't give him the perspective he thinks. And those quotes are, as people have pointed out, absolute horseshit.

I will add that more recently he has played Thatcher f**ked The Kids live again and opened it with a speech about how it's about time we get the Tory party out, and he once spoke on a podcast about how his parents raised him conservative and in the last ten years or so he's had to talk them the other way round. And I believe after the last election he posted something about how frustrated he was with the result.

I'd like to think he's matured in the last ten years. He's far from perfect, for sure, and has some absolute misses of songs. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt but totally understand why many wouldn't

Disappointed to see a lack of love for Flyte on this thread. In my mind they are one of the finest bands this country has produced in a long time and I'm so pleased they are finally getting to play Glasto. Avalon is a perfect stage for them and I implore anyone who loves harmony-drenched indie-folk and timeless songwriting reminiscent of Paul Simon, Crowded House, and Rubber Soul-era Beatles to go and see them. Their live shows are wonderfully wholesome.

The lead singer, Will, is Billie Marten's partner and I would imagine she will be part of their live band setup. The Deep Blue have supported them and are vocally huge fans of theirs too. The Staves are also good friends of theirs as Jess Stave and Will were housemates for a few years and she also stepped in as part of their live band a few years ago when one of their original members left.
