Well it's one thing that some parts of the media would tie themselves in knots giving the job to a German. Given the UK-Argentina tensions, that's another matter. Indeed, some have said this is why Poch is probably going to not do that.

 

Well that and I think he's suitably annoyed after Chelsea and PSG that he wants another club job to prove he can do it. Least based on the last rumour, anyway.

Apparently the US made an approach after sacking their manager for a pisspoor performance at the Copa America. But unsurprisingly he said "Nah"

That could be an element of it, given that Kane, Foden and Bellingham all seemed to be competing to play in the same areas of the pitch and given Kane also had fitness issues after an injury in the latter phase of last season, it didn't help with the element of it all being square-peg-in-round-hole.

It's up to him as much as anything. Before the final, talk was that the FA wanted him to stick around for the next World Cup, which would mean negotiating an extension to a contract that expires at the end of the year, but I'd be surprised if that perspective changed in the FA boardroom.

 

It's as much up to him on whether he thinks he can rebuild and go again. Certainly, with 5 weeks until the next Premier League season starts, any teams who's managers might be of interest as a successor would want to know if they can expect an imminent approach.

Talking of the next World Cup, one of the venues in a tournament that will be jointly held by Mexico, the USA and Canada will be the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

 

Judging by the chaos at last night's Copa America final, they may have flubbed the audition. Game started well over an hour late, escalators were trashed, fans were spotted breaking into and crawling through vents, clashes with police, some getting knocked out... not ideal.

 

A near-half hour half-time to accommodate a Shakira concert and Messi getting taken off with a massively swollen ankle also seemingly added to something of the unreality of it all.

Thanks Gareth, you made England watchable again and made them almost good enough to win things.

Whoever takes over has a near impossible job to do and will likely not be given time by those who choose to abuse managers for not winning everything.

I would have personally liked to see him stay on until after the world cup to be honest but I can see why he wants to step away, it's a pretty thankless task at times and the vitriol that was heaped upon him during this campaign would have been enough to test anybody. He's so well liked by the players and I know we shouldn't gauge success by failure but he's still the most successful manage we have had in 58 years.

Think it was time to go tbf. 8 years is an age for a modern football manager, plus it felt like after the group stage that the sheer extent of the bollocking he and his players got from fans seemed to lead to him thinking the time might be right for a rest.

 

If nothing else, a legacy of 2 finals and a semi plus a national team way more coherent than the confused rabble that failed to win a game at the 2014 World Cup and then were humiliated by Iceland 2 years later is a great platform for someone to try and take the next step.

One of the plans B's could be Eddie Howe, who seems to get it in the neck now and again for not querying what Newcastle's overlords in Saudi get up to when not in the business of running Newcastle.

 

Saying that I currently think it'll be Graham Potter, if only due to him being unemployed as much as anything else. Newcastle are certainly making noises that they'd be reluctant to part with pre-season having only just begun and Howe still serving a 3 year contract, one that would require a fair wedge of compensation to break.

Seems a decent bloke Southgate plus 2 finals on the bounce. Booed off early in the tournament, better off out of it.
 

Hopefully England appoint Lampard or Warnock. Maybe even Gerrard AND Lampard for old times sake.

The big issue is there is no English manager with much of a track record of success. They said on the times podcast Howe is the best of a mediocre bunch and that’s probably right.

Whoever it is needs to be a manager who will continue Gareth's work in forming a good close knit relationship amongst the players. No egos, just a togetherness that was sadly lacking before he took over and a desire to play for England.

 

For me, Lee Carsley is the sensible option here, he knows the workings of the FA, is familiar with the players and has a good record with the U21 side as well as winning the European U21 championships.

 

Another one to consider is Sarina Weigman. Proven track record with the England women and a good win average.

I remember 'great platforms' well after the 1990 World Cup.

 

4 years later under the dire Taylor (wanted by people cos he took a small club and made them good) England failed to even qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the USA despite having a great platform and supposedly great players.

 

Let's hope history does not repeat given where the next World Cup is.
