I'm pretty sure the singer tells the guitarist to go to the boat when he goes in the crowd to make sure it gets shown on camera so they must have been somewhat aware, unless they just noticed it mid set and decided on that

I'm bemused by what Banksy thought it was trying to achieve in truth. Seems like a peculiar use of time and resources and the message seems muddled.

maybe he didn’t have a set outcome in mind. Maybe he wanted to set the boat afloat and see what people did in the real world when they were asked to hold it up.
