But in those situations you have two things you don't have here: 1) structure, so everyone can get heard, and people can be held responsible for what they say and 2) good faith - the very point of attending a debate is to have a conversation and try and change minds An internet forum is not that. People are not necessarily operating in good faith. "Trolling" is absolutely a thing, and while often stuff gets classified as "trolling" which isn't, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Not everyone is here for a debate. Some people are just here to spew horrible things, wind people up and then laugh. Some are just here to express anger at some perceived slight by the booking policy. I get where you are coming from. There are some people on this site I've had massive arguments with, and disagreed with hugely, but they always argued in good faith and we'd all admit when we were wrong. I mean to put it another way, using your debating seminars as an example, imagine if say you were hosting a debate on who should be the next PM. And one speaker just stood up and started chanting "Sunak out. Sunak out. Sunak out" over and over, trying to get the audience to join in. Presumably you would shut that down? Because that person isn't there to debate. They're just acting as a disrupter. What happened with that post was the online equivalent of that.

They've played festivals since then without doing that e.g. Coachella. It'll be the money that stops it happening -

This was the learning for me as well. We sat on the hill then wandered down for the majority, moved around, had space to dance. I quite like the concept of the Sunday headliner being the legend and then afterwards you get more interesting stuff. I know that wasnt intentional and it led to problems in the rest of the site but it was a lovely chilled Pyramid experience. -

One of the best Glastonburys I've been to. Had a really fun time, saw loads of great stuff and performances. Also apart from one morning and the car-to-camp on Wednesday I didn't suffer too much at all. The Good Probably the best year for seeing so many good / great performances Enough to lots of space at stages for nearly every act I went to see (also see The Bad). Rimski's Yard - good fun and a bit strange. Nice to escape the crowd madness of a lot of other late night places. Found this place by accident in 2022. Glasto Latino The weather. Woodsie's was nice The Arcadia dragonfly Lonely Hearts Club evolution Tipi field fire area The Bad Mostly cheesy / crap nostaglia acts drawing massive crowds. I'm not sure people even genuinley enjoy these things or just go for the sake of going. Cut down and prevent the massive crowds which are proving a bit unmanageble. Can't comment on the SEC as I didn't go at all as it's not for me, but don't basically announce or have massive acts in small venues. Glastonbury on Sea - still not sure it's worth the hassle and cost. I went for a 10 minute walkaround between acts on the Park on Sunday. Take the helter Skelter back to Avalon and give it some identitiy back. It feels on it's way out and will end up being swallowed by yet another dance area 🙄 The woodchip everywhere was unneccesary but easy to say in hindsight. They got a bit trigger-happy putting all that down in advance. Not much bad for me really as the crowd thing didn't personally affect me really except trying to leave Greenpeace after Lynks, but must have been annoying / worrying to be caught up in if you were. -
It's a great piece with some very interesting points. Of the 3 most recent festivals I went to last year, and although the site was busier than I remember from my previous visits I don't really remember any massive crowd issues. It seems that this year may have been as a result of poor programming and 2022 possibly as a post covid hangover, but as these problems become more pronounced it becomes clearer that something needs to change.
