One of the most important and influential musicians of all time vs someone whose most famous contribution to the 21st Century is being hammered at a cup draw. Any comparison between the two feels incredibly surface level.

That's not a ringing endorsement of Ebony and Ivory, is it?Β

Steve Wonder is magnificent, his 70's run of albums is right up there with anyone ever for brilliance, and he's an utter musical polymath on loads of instruments, with an amazing voice as well. stone cold 10/10. An actual genius when that term is ridiculously overapplied.Β

Β

But you're damn right he's released some absolute steaming terrible shite as well, most particularly in the eighties. Thats easily ignored for me, happilyΒ πŸ‘Β

We could compare record sales.Β

Of which, Rod has more.Β

Echo this. To return to @Rose-Colored BoyΒ - who, I think it's fair to say, we typically align on - absolutely no denial that Wonder is one of the great musical geniuses of the back half of the twentieth century. Genuinely a sensational songwriter and musician on his day.Β

Β

But at the same time, Rod has endured for a reason. The man might well be the greatest covers singer of his generation and that's not to be sniffed at either, I guess.Β

Β

Either way, both playing adds a very Tony Blackburn flavour to proceedings on the Sunday.Β

I was amazed to see him drumming in that Summer of Soul festival film released a few years ago

Was skim reading the page and my first thought was "Gregg Wallace plays the drums?"
