Am I the only one kinda shocked of Chappell Roan being a likely headliner?

I not only never heard of her I never ever heard of a single song from her. I don’t think I have ever attended a festival where I haven’t even accidentally come across the name or a song of a headliner.

It looks to me she only has a single album from last year, what’s going on with this? Can someone explain to me why it’s a given that she is a headliner of the biggest festival of Europe?

I don’t mind it I’m just genuinely curious

The turnout for her set at Lollapolooza Chicago earlier this year was the biggest in the festival's history, anywhere in the world. She is huge

(Poss fake) line up poster for Victorious Fest in UK, a week or two after Sziget. It's a Superstruct event.

Would love Vampire Weekend.

If it's not fake it indicates QOTSA around around Europe all summer and must be a strong candidate for the indie/rock headliner on the island.

Wow, cracking line up. I would love if QOTSA did Sziget. Here's hoping!

And yet that set has 200k views while Billie Eilish’s Lollapalooza Chicago live video has 10mil. IDK just something is really weird about this.

You telling me that more people turned up for her than Billie even though Billie has been absolutely everywhere I heard her songs at least thousands of times through Tiktok, TV, Youtube, just saw her in the news hundreds of times for years. And yet this lady drew a bigger crowed whos videos on Youtube trend towards few millions while Billie has videos watched in literally the billions?

It just makes no sense to me. Might be a local thing? I see no chance of her pulling any reasonable crowed at Sziget, but I guess I could be just out of touch.

The only weird thing about this is that you're comparing the whole 1hr set uploaded by some random user with one song posted on the official channel. Apples and oranges...

You mean the same Chappel Roan whose Bonnaroo set has 1.4m views?

Honestly, I find Chappel much more interesting than Eilish, despite I am definitely out of target demographics. I think getting her would be an amazing booking. But ofc, it's subjective pov

It’s funny to me how everybody is so defensive when I simply asked for help to explain how is she supposed to be this popular with one album and not a single hit song or any cultural phenomenon.

I’m not saying she is bad IDC I’m just curious what is this all about cos I have never heard of someone this seemingly unknown yet being so big in festivals apparently for some reason.

Dude, I feel the same lol ..

In the past, Sziget was able to bring Rihanna, P!nk, Dua Lipa, Amy Winehouse, ... and now we're talking about

"Chappell Roan" ? ....

dont worry, you're not the only one being surprised . Times have changed, that's all...

Are you saying she has no hit songs? If so, I'd suggest looking at her Spotify streams. Good Luck Babe reached one billion plays just recently. She's definitely not 'unknown', it just seems you wanna believe that despite what we're saying lol

I think he's just surprised to see that someone with literally only ONE album in her young career , is already considered Headliner in one of the biggest festival in Europe.

I kind of understand it, because we were used to have headliners with 'stronger references', I mean, it's a bit early to know if this Roan girl is gonna have a beautiful career like P!ink or Kylie Minogue, or if she's gonna die (i mean musically) like a Selena Gomez

Where are you from? Or what are your “circles”. Maybe she is like really big amongst a certain audience.

But honestly there is no way she is known for the global audience.

Btw I heard similar things said about Janelle Moane a few tears ago. She is the next big thing, she is masisve, she is defo headliner, and like she really fell flat last year at Sziget at least.

Btw her songs sound fine to me I’m just really surprised that no one in my circles have heard of her, not once I heard of her on Tiktok or the news and yet apparently she is this mega star now.

I’m not bashing her I’m sure she is fine but you have to admit this is very weird

Don't know what is so defensive about my reply. I just explained you were comparing two completely different things.

Honestly, I couldn't care less about her but acknowledge she's huge. She has more monthly listeners than Charli who I'd say is more hot/popular right now. And all that with just one album which was released more than a year ago.

Festivals are changing, big names we all know are getting old or they're not bothered to play at festivals at all. We will see more and more newbies who got popular quickly in these slots. That's why Sam Fender is headlining Rock Werchter and Chappel Primavera.

Just accept that you're getting old/out of loop or you're just not interested in her music or pop in general. I don't understand a lot of things in this world, yet they happen.

Yeah I’m more used to artists coming out with a great album touring for years with other big names, gaining popularity steadily, llaying like second stage headliner spots, coming out with second and third album, winning awards, being all over the news and THEN they reach proper headliner slots. Or has it always been this way?

Well, maybe I’m old. But for example I was initially sceptical about Fred again, but once I listened to it and looked more into him I saw how he is bringing something new and fresh and people have been really starved for this new kind of music.

So even though his rise to fame was pretty quick too, I understood why.

So far Chappell puzzles me in terms of what she offers that has not been offered yet.

Btw, I probably should not read into the fact that you mispelled her name, it’s probably not the fact that she is not famous enough for people to spell her name properly but it did make me think of that for a second :))

(to be fair : Roan is american, Charli is british... it helps a lot when you come from a country with 340 million inhabitants compared to only 55 ^^)

But I do feel the same : nowadays, a fashionable artist can easily be a headliner, and 5 years later forgotten by everyone..

The first time Dua Lipa headlined sziget she only had one album out.

Also who's to say that Chappell won't release anything new before her summer festival dates.

It’s definitely changed. I can think of Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, Dua etc that all blew up with 1 or 2 albums. It’s the way music works now. Stuff goes viral on TikTok, music is far more accessible through streaming. I think it will become common place for an artist to completely blow up and headline festivals with a smaller back catalogue than was probably common pre 2020.

mate shes ridiculously famous. I'm not a fan and it may be hard to see past your circle but her fame is undeniable. And on the note of Fred again, it's all subjective no? I personally think his music is contrived shite and there's been a plethora of interesting electronic music released at a constant rate over the past god knows how many years.

But on the note of needing the credentials or 'earning' your headline slot over a few years; it's all quite dynamic. Yes, traditionally most artists will do just that and get the headline slot when they are more established to the crowd, but some are just instantly cultural zeitgeists and can draw 80 thousand people to a festival less than a year from their popularity spiking. Just look at Arctic Monkeys, headlining Glasto a year after their debut and only a couple of months after their second. It can happen, if they can draw the crowd, they'll get booked

I see Charli as an american, basically. She spends a lot of time there, hangs out with US influencers, performed on SNL and then did surprise pop-up show at Times square... I think she's exposed to american audience as much as Roan.

hmmm I still think you underestimate the conservative side of Americans, and the strength of deep America  😉 which means that Roan will be more successful than Charli ^^

Anyway ! truth is : give us MARINA, and she'll beat she sh*t out of everyone else ❤️🥰

I can’t imagine a situation in which conservative Americans would listen to Charli or Chappell so the strength of Deep South (America?) is irrelevant.

I was thinking Marina for viral in 2022.... savages and bubblegum b*tch have gone repeatedly viral on tiktok over that time.. but it's a bit of a far stretch.

Pretty sure Chappell Roan is making new music as we speak..wouldn’t surprise me if there a few new singles before next year Szitget if she on the line up

Sam fender is starting to play Stadiums and probably the closest thing to Bruce Springsteen.. so I can see why he starting to headline a few major festivals

I know we are all talking headliners

but I’m just as excited to see the undercard

bastille ?

Foster the people ?
Confidence Men?

Empire of the Sun ?
DMAs ?
The Temper Trap ?

heaps of possibilities
