K-Pop, J-Rock and Asian Music

Not sure if I have missed an existing topic, but another one to mull geographically here.

Had a blast at Seventeen this year, which has helped to broaden the general horizons further - so who else from the Asian music scene could play at Glastonbury? Who else has played before? And do we have any general recommendations to share?

A little uncertain myself.  I work with quite a few Punjabi folk and they're also a bit non-plussed at how the guy is suddenly packing arenas.  Kind of thing I'd be up for seeing but dunno if I want to lay out a fat stack on a ticket for it.

Yeah, I saw the prices were... big.

I've never seen anything from the South Asia region, I think. Seen a couple of J-rock acts, but really want to broaden my horizons some more.

Never made it to Arrivals (or whatever it was called) this year but in theory it'd be playing my sort of stuff.  Seen a couple of Indian acts at the G over the years.  Raghu Dixit springs to mind.  In fact more than once.

Will have to seek that one out.

I had great fun with that! I’d seen a fantastic Tibetan throat singers group in Green Futures years ago and knew I’d be up for the Hu.

They're supporting Iron Maiden across America, which I think will be the biggest break they've had yet. Expect to see them in a few more places soon, with any luck.

Should book Diljit Dosanjh imho

def  would want a Pyramid slot with the show he puts on.  He was fun at Coachella.

No Party for Cao Dong  played in pussy parlour the final year it existed and theyre great. Theres plenty of bands from Taiwan for example that plenty of people on here would enjoy. Yaosobi is a J Rock/Pop band thats been making the rounds and theyre a lot of fun live too.

Surely they’d headline?

I can't imagine for a second that the Festival would take that kind of risk, and especially not after the experiences of 2024 - where two of the most disappointing crowds of the weekend (relative to their perceived size outside the festival) were for a Pyramid headliner who doesn't really match with the festival audience, and for a (albeit much lesser known) K-Pop act. It'd be bonkers to double down and book a K-Pop Pyramid Headliner with the potential for another embarrassingly small crowd - I think for a couple festivals at least they try and play it relatively safe at the top.

Blackpinks last visit to the UK was failing to sell out a reduced capacity show at BST, so I don't think they're as huge here as they seem to be elsewhere, and it's plausible that their management might be prepared to accept a lesser slot knowing the exposure that they can get.

Having been at yet another K-content thing with the 16 year old today this is an interesting thread.

Balming tiger were the act I really enjoyed this year.

Glastonbury has never been able or wanted to do teen music though. The way it falls in term time and the way the tickets are now just makes it impossible.

Agree with Suprefan re J Rock bands. I think the festival doesnt really know what to do with it all as it doesn't really fit the World Music box like Womad that they would like to fit it into.

Rina Sawayama’s played, might be a good shout for next year.

Notwithstanding that I hope she won't get booked, her stuff isn't exactly "Asian music".

I could see a credible case for being a plus-sized Other headliner opposite a rockier act on the Pyramid, but yeah, not sure they'd be going there.

That could easily become another Wizkid scenario of an Other Stage closer getting very few people.
