What's changed?

The woodsies area is much better for it as well, nice shade and benches during the day, chill vibes after dark.  I spent way more time there than any previous festival, just chilling in the shade or the sun between acts or ending up there for a spliff and a wind down at the end of my night.

Other differences between 2024 and early 2000's.....no campfires (people used to sit around their fire). Mobile phone reception is good - resulting in big changes in behaviour.  Don't need cash (mostly). Less randomness and things to stumble upon.  Secret gigs = avoid as will be crammed. More stuff on Wednesday and Thursday. Fewer drugs openly for sale. Increase in average age of attendees. Sound quality on big stages much better.  Less nakedness and Traveller types. And.... oh yes..... The guy selling candle powered boats to fix his mill in Wales is no longer around!

That spontaneous cheer that people used to do on the Wednesday that would carry from one side to the other.

People shouting “Alan” randomly (was annoying)

Legal high shops

I loved the "Alan" shouting.  It still makes me laugh when I think about it

I can’t prove it but I’m sure it was our group who started this, probably 2004, a big group of us on Big Ground. We kept shouting for our lost friend and eventually it just spread around the Pyramid area. It was quite an amazing experience to hear it from far off.

Alan was ‘Scottish Alan’, he now lives in Dubai and hasn’t returned to the festival for years.

I fully believe you.  2004 was my first Glasto and we camped at Big Ground. That left a huge impression on me!

I thought this went back to 2000- I certainly remember walking back to the car after David Bowie with people shouting ( Monty Python style) Alan, Alan and everyone replying - I’m Alan, no, I’M Alan, NO! I’M Alan!! 😂

Maybe so, I could be wrong, or it’s a coincidence as I don’t think we were inspired by an existing chant.
