Good for an up and comer! Glasto 25 Smaller bands thread!

Some great recommendations here. 

 

Very much enjoying t l k and Man/Woman/Chainsaw, and lots to listen to. 

 

I'll add the below - none brand new to the scene, but either branching out or still bubbling under. 

 

Naima Bock, recent LP: Below a Massive Dark Land. Member of Goat Girl and hints of Joanna Newsom, Aldous Harding, maybe Beth Gibbons. Took a couple of listens but I think it's really great. 

 

Moon Diagrams - from one of the Deerhunter crew, who loves playing with his loopy electronica. Similar to early Caribou.

 

Field Music - not new on the block, but Sunderland-based brothers making mathy, 80s sounding, pop rocky stuff. 

 

Rebelski - Martin Rebelski, the keyboard player for Doves. Album of lovely ambient earlier

this year.

I would definitely recommend  Man/Woman/Chainsaw live! 

I'll add Gia Ford to the list. Great album out last month but mostly excellent live.

There sound is so easy to get into - I can not beleive they have not broken into mainstream yet. I feel a little sad for them.   I though they would be a shoow in for this fesival in an early slot on a bigger stage but apparently they are on tour with Robbie instead -   Which actually could be really good for them

Haha now im gutted - for not knowing who they were this year until recently dammit, I often torture myself by looking at old line ups and thinking why was I not there!!!   Also thanks for bringing also thanks for bringing  Our GIrl to the chat can not believe we were talking about them in the new music thread and I forgot to mention them here - to much good music lower down right now to keep track off.

They seem to be doing pretty good but Royal Otis are a new band to me, and what a discovery. They have a nostalgic feel which throws me back to cans of cider and my portable cd player whilst also being some of the best new indie music i've heard in a long time.

 Mary In The Junkyard were great at the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury last year too!

W.H.Lung (were great at Williams Green a few years ago)

Sea Lemon

Glastonbury is actually pretty poor for these kinds of bands compared to other festivals, given its relative size to other festivals in particular.

 

I'm never sure whether that's a direct policy of the festival, or more to do with the affordability for small bands losing money on playing the small stages.

Great thread. So far this morning I've discovered that I like Mary in the Junkyard very much indeed and the Lottery Winners are very hit and miss but mostly miss (for me).

 

I'd love to see Wings of Desire get a slot on the farm.

Chose this for my new discover of the day (il probably work though all the ones I do not know)  Very moody suits the weather -  I quite like Goat Girl - but (not that its a competition) prefer this to there last effort which i thoight was really poor - compared to there first 2 albums

 

Would be great to catch in one of the small green fields stages

They played last year but Fat Dog would be a welcome return, possibly a mid afternoon slot on Woodsies. Saw them on Sunday, blistering form at the moment.

 

Going to throw Nell Mescal in the ring, fantastic singer/songwriter even if she undoubtedly benefits from the fact that her brother is famous.

How about Coldplay? I've heard good things about them, and I think they can hit it big if they get a chance.

Already mentioned but one of my favourite bands around at the minute.

Jangle pop duo from Canada. On second album, but would love them to get a slot somewhere.

Done some festivals in the UK a few years ago. New album out in Feb so hopefully on the festival scene come the summer.

Really pleased someone has mentioned wh lung. Saw them at latitude a few years ago after pitching up near one of their parents in the van field. So pleased we went to their gig, they were great, and the guitarist and his family were a nice bunch

Did anyone see sprints in leftfield? I was torn between them and LCD soundsystem until the very last moment.

I'm hoping they had a packed house and put on a ranger!!

I had the same dilema, I had a overnight shft starting of site,  so I basically had to catch 90% of LCD as Sprints was further Away and would make me late.   Missed IDLES as well, Immediately after Glasto had to book tickets for IDLES, supported by SPRINTS,  has i missed both -  they were cracking in support although there setlist was in a strange order.  Im actually randomly going to these two as my next two gigs. 

 

Hopfully someone here was there so they can tell us all about it.

They were were excellent at Left Field and the tent was rightly packed.  I saw them at Kentish Town Forum last week and they absolutely smashed it again.

Ah amazing glad it was packed. I was worried that it would be a thin crowd. I was sooo close to going but LCD in the sun won out. Figured I'll get many more opportunities to see sprints

Fat Dog played 5 times this year, would love to see them get 1 decent slot next year.

Good thread and some good suggestions.

 

They probably fall outside of this now, size wise, in fact they definitely do, but, I'm really hoping Royel Otis get a slot this time.

 

They're great. Looking forward to seeing them again next week.

Add me to the growing Fat Dog fan club. Also hoping that Oranj Son can find a way in this time round; the singer did a solo set on one of the green futures stages a couple of years ago on the Wednesday or Thursday and cos they are scousers he did get a decent crowd but I’m pretty sure he only played cos he had a ticket!  They are good.

Even worse since they got rid of Williams Green, I used to love that tent for exactly that reason, saw so many great smaller bands there who I turned out to absolutely love, such as WH Lung, Holy f**k and Ulrich Schnaus to name a few. Brilliant bands, I am not sure where they would play these days now WG has gone

 

I was there for that William Green set a few years back. Was brilliant. I also went to see them at a tiny venue in Norwich last night which was also ace. They really deserve to be bigger than they are, a cracking band with a great front man

Chalk - post punk with a working mens club sound. Not seen them yet but heard great things. Some excellent singles released already.
