Tears for Fears

Did somebody call Tears for Fears a "novelty act" on the first page?

Steady on now.

This! @Skip997, you're a cheeky monkey! They have always been a proper, 'musician's' band, whether you like them or not. The first two records are stone cold classics and they have managed to maintain quality throughout a career chequered by bust-ups between Roland and Curt. I saw them on the Songs From The Big Chair tour in 1985 and they were amazing. I'm the person just about the least nostalgic about bands in general, including those I loved in my youth, but I would be ALL over this. However, (1) they probably would want more money than GFL will offer and (2) I just don't think GFL would give them the sort of slot they would expect. The only way I could see it is a 'secret' Churnups-type slot. And I'd be there with bells on.

If you've not heard Everybody Wants to Rule the World or Shout at least once, I'd be surprised.

I think I'd heard one or two before but I wasn't that au fait with them when I saw them before The Killers at BST Hyde Park in 2017. So was quite something when I heard the Everybody Wants To Rule The World intro and chorus and was like "... oh so that's who does that song"

I don't know who Tears for Fears are. Got to be said 😼

That'll be your age. Not criticising you for that, we can't help when we're born, but if you were born earlier you'd know. (I'm guessing you're under 30 due to the fact you ended your post with "got to be said")

That's reflective of them more than my age. I like a lot of 80s bands. I assume their music hasn't aged well.

Pale Shelter also a sensational tune.

The whole first 2 albums are excellent. Wasn't keen on the 3rd album but the song Sowing the Seeds of Love is an absolute banger.

Only ever seen them once and that was supporting The Killers at BST in 2017. I used to really like them back in the day but for various reasons had never seen them live.

From memory, I was really disappointed by them. It might have been because at the time they were one of the few bands I like but had never seen live and so my expectation and excitment of seeing them was set to high. They just seemed like an average cover band to me even if they wereplaying their own material. In my head, I had them badged as a "synth band" so was expecting it to be more electronic but what I got was a fairly standard drums/guitar band with little to no key board action.

Maybe they always had a standard band live set up and sound, I just don't know. As a huge Depeche Mode fan, I was aware of their change in sound as the years went by but for some reason in my mind I still expected Tears to Fears to sound like they did on a Now album or Top of the Pops from when I was a kid 😄

However, there is no doubting they have a fine set of songs.
