Woman sentenced for hurling milkshake at Farage

"Thomas Bowen has been given a 13-week jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, must pay the MP £150 compensation, complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £450 in court costs."

 

What do we think of this? If someone threw a milkshake in your face, do you think the perpetrator would get a sentence like this?

 

...and Farage (arguably) deserves it!

I don't think it's ok to throw milkshake over Farage even if he is a c**t, same as I don't think it's ok to shoot dead a CEO of a US health insurance company even if health insurance thing is f**ked and the shooter was cute.

I think there needs to be a standard of protest/humiliation against politicians that is considered acceptable. It's worth emphasising that when Ed Miliband got egged, he laughted it off and treated it as a nothing - and eggs are actually more dangerous than milkshakes.

 

I don't really mind if throwing milkshakes is banned, as long as something is made explicitly legal as an act of not-violent but disruptive protest against individual politicians.

You should be allowed to do something as harmless as throw milkshake at someone when they're an arsehole. Farage is part of a long lineage of fascist UK politicians that caused harm in country just so they can make a few quid. Mosley, Powell, Farage et al. They're all harmless until they're not. I bet there are plenty of people who were in arms reach of Hitler who wished they'd done a whole lot more than throw a milkshake at him.

 

As for the original question, heck no, if I got a milkshake thrown at me the thrower definitely wouldn't get that sentence. Farage has special treatment, and this country is not a fair place

When does someone venture into fascist territory, then? Say Mussolini is a 10/10. Who would be a low level 1/10 fascist in your opinion?

 

And vitally, do you think the woman's sentence was fair and consistent with what would be given to you if you decided to throw a milkshake at someone?

Its a very 2019ish opinion. I think the overton window has shifted massivley since then, as far I can see alot of twitter now seems to think he's too left wing now as he didn't sit with the Meloni's, Le Pen's, AFD's in the European Parliament and refuses to commit to deporting illegals.

well, you really have put me on the spot.

I think calling yourself a fascist is a start, violence against minorities, being authoritarian, militaristic and autocratic. Not sure Farage fits those characteristic. He is a right wing populist like Trump and co. Saying immigration is too high and criticising the EU and multi culturalism and various minority faiths doesn't make you a fascist.

And is that women's sentence fair? Probably. Would someone who did same to me get same, probably not...but he was just a politician out campaigning in an election and she was made an example of. Next time it might be something worse than milkshake.

A suspended sentence isn't too bad. I'd expect to be arrested if I did it in front of the police and media. No idea if I'd get a caution or a fine instead.

I used to think this stuff was a laugh but I've changed my mind. There was a danger it would escalate. The next incident was someone throwing bricks at the open top bus.

I think you can debate/argue whether Farage is a fascist or a populist, but after Jan 6th I think Trump clearly is.

I'd definitely call Farage a fascist. Nationalism, scapegoating, cult of personality. The reason why some people here don't think he's a fascist is because he doesn't have power. She was made an example of, it's a deterrent, like some will argue that people blocking roads or rioting or inciting stuff on facebook getting jail sentences is unfair...all deterrents. Don't do it.
