Still don't see it as any more than a (very media savvy) band knowing how / choosing to make the best impression given the platform available to them. Probably yes also roping in the broadcaster to ensure things go well.

Ultimately it's still an artistic choice, even if it's not the "pure" artistry that some would like.
It wasn't the old 'schools and colleges' clock that was the point - it was the fact that the performance was, for me at least, very unashamedly aligned with what the broadcaster expected and wanted (with agreement with the band of course).

The flirts with corporate sponsorship in the past you mention don't feel ralated to what I'm getting at as that relates to the broadcast / streaming coverage specifically? The coverage reference RE Dodgy scarely feels on anything like the scale we see now (knowing them, I can imagine they may even have been being ironic at the time), which appears intrinically embedded in how some stages are programmed and some performances are orchestrated today.
