Who can explain this photo to me?!?!

themuel - this is an intriguing thread and i do not doubt that the photo is genuine but, hypothetically speaking, if there was a trick and one of us did solve the mystery, you'd tell us right?

'If' there was a trick I would tell you yes, but there isn't, so I cant! I have no idea how it happened. I can say for certain there were no limb hiding antics going on though! Although the thought of it did make me laugh so thanks!

ha no worries. tbh i can see it is very unlikely and your mate Darren would have to be pretty strong to hold him up without breaking his back (his face does look a little strained mind you).

If you look at the shadows of the girls legs on the water at the front the light V in betwen them is disturbed by a horizontal shadow about the thickness of an arm. Same on the guy's side. This suggests that the kid had his arms spread out but not touching the guy or the girl. Also the water surface to the right and left of their boots suggest they hadn't moved for a while, but there's a lot of ripple action behind, as if he might have jumped up. My other thought is that he has a head twice the size of a normal one and he is standing about 12 feet behind them. I rest my case.

I dont think this is faked but I have a few questions.....

How can you have been unaware that the kid was there?? have you ever tried running through knee deep water to get into someone elses photo??? You make a load of splashing and noise!

Maybe the kid appears to have no legs because he saw a photo opportunity, thought....."I know I can get in that shot if I ran" legged it over and just at the final moment he realised he wasnt going to make it unless he jumped forward - Thus hiding his legs from view

Personally, I think he is just standing with either leg hidden behind the legs of the two people - I didnt really think there was much afoot from the photo from the minute I saw it.

Still.....this is a cracking thread all the same - Respect to the person who took the little kid out aswell!

Good questions Watson... allow me to provide possible explanations...;

( a ) The two soap-dodgers who are the subject of the lens, are both wearing apparel that might restrict their auditory apparatus.

( b ) The weather conditions were most inclement, and many travellers were experiencing the same conditions in the localised area. This being the case, there would have been a large volume of similar splashing or slupring noises in the area. Another addition would not have attracted much attention!

( c ) This area is known for merchants playing the music of the day, at loud volume from their personal gramaphones. This constant cacophony may have helped to mask the sound of any young cut-purses approaching from behind.

No idea! I know it is incredibly unattentive of me to not see a child hijack my photo, but then I am from Cornwall and we are very slow down here....

The only thing that makes me think his legs arent just hidden behind their legs is that if you draw his body in it seems very out of proportion, very long legs and a pretty short body!

I think the original is genuine - its a tall kid bent forward, the horizontal shadows are his arms and you can see some shadow of his right leg behind the girl.
