How can you call Vice City and San Andreas mere expansion packs? Those games were huge and full of new content, new characters, new cars, new types of vehicles, different actors, new missions, etc!

You see, this is why developers don't like to build on what they have done before. Say a developer gives you a whole new game, but decides to include the old stuff because it's, well, still good, it is actually sometimes better business sense to not include the older stuff because it looks like filler, when really, it's actually just better value.

The sequel then gets looked in a more negative light than if the developer simply cut all the old stuff out of it and just gave them the new stuff, it's actually worse value for money but if it has "new" slapped on everything the average customer thinks they're getting a good deal. Reviews also mark games down for including old stuff. I sympathise with developers so much, when they give people something new they complain it's not like the old, when they do the old they complain there's nothing new, when a developer gives the consumer both old and new in the same game, it still isn't enough.

"It uses the same engine so its an expansion pack" is often a common complaint, and totally wrong. When vast art assets and sound and everything needs to built from the ground up in the same engine again, that's a full blown sequel in my eyes. Do people realise how long a game engine takes to create, you know with all the graphical fancy bells and physics whistles that people are so fond of? A really good one? If a game developer threw away their game engine every time they wanted to make a sequel most would be bankrupt by now.

Never undesrtood the Vice City/San Andreas sequel confusion. If they'd have called Vice City - GTA 4 and San Andreas - GTA 5 instead then people would have believed it. Funny how something as small as the name or label can have such a massive influence of the publics perception of it.

i very much get your point man, 3 still very much my favorite game of the 3, it just seemed more fresh, like how Jurrassic Park is well old, but still really good, cause you appreciate how new and amazing it was at the time. Vice city and San Andreas, although they did add a HUGE amount of new content, vehicles and the best thing in my opinion massive new story lines that are so expansive, just got lost under 'rip-offs' (in a broad sense) of the style of GTA3, for me anyway.

i played games like Crackdown, and saw what GTA could be if maybe with those two games, instead of building them exactly on the engine of 3, were expanded in terms of gameplay, and not just in terms of size.

i mean, stick with what works, and they made 2 games that were as playable, as popular, and arguably (obviously) as good as 3. But i personally have bee waiting for a gameplay/engine upgrade since 3.

i was being facetious calling them expansions, more just a point about how next level it seems GTA4 will turn out to be and how awesome i expect it to be, and as you say, how easy it is to pecieve the two games as sequels.

Aye I know what you mean, Crackdown is also fantastic, I still play it every now and then.

I wonder if they're gonna do their Vice Cities and San Andreas spin offs for this new GTA? I've been waiting for a return to London personally, and there's plenty of political satire ripe for the picking in that place.

absolutely, i think they'll be back in london...

id like to see them so something like Japa or Russia, even maybe Italy, with diffirent mafias/gangs there and endless scope to use the countries pasts for story lines and satire.

but tbh the major games that came off 3 didnt leave the United states style environment, and id be suprised if they did this time.

Carser City is a place always referenced in every game, but never visited. Could that be a middle-America place? Or somewhere like Texas/Mexico? Imagine steallin horses with six-shooters and rampaging around the city with a sword decaptitating people like that scene in The Holy Grail, and being the second gunman in a shoot-the-president mission - sweet.

when i heard carser i'd always think of Carson City, NV

i think there's two american options open to them.

1. NW America/Canada - Seattle, Portland, Vancouver - Bring in some cross-border missions

2. New Mexico/Texas/Mexico - Similar to above, evading border patrol for missions and suchlike

if they're goin outside of the US then theres so many options open to them. I'd like to see a GTA: Rio type game. Urban areas, slums, high rises etc mixed with rainforest areas.

But the lead character in this new game is Russian isn't he? Seems like they're really trying to establish that there's a world out there beyond America......

Where else is there in America you can go? San Andreas was California with LA, San Francisco, Utah, Las Vegas, Monument Valley etc on the west coast heading inwards. Vice City was set in a Miami area, and Liberty City is New York and the north. That's pretty much all of America.

Liberty City is very much just New York isnt it? and not Even New York (state), just New York City, they could easilly expand it to include Boston and Washington much like San Andreas included 3 towns as all are very different and have very different areas between them, New England has super rich Conneticut, and Cape Cod on the way up to Boston, while you have industrial Baltimore on the way down to Washington

For all we know they may have done a little bit of that with 4.

I'd say America has been coverred.

Personlly, if not London then make use of Japan/China for some Yakuza/Triad shindig.
