Glastonbury Festival organisers have confirmed that U2 will headline next year's Glastonbury Festival.
Festival organiser Michael Eavis says, "The 26-year-old rumour has finally come true. At last, the biggest band in the world are going to play the best festival in the world! Nothing could be better for our 40th anniversary party. And there are even more surprises in the pipeline..."
An article in The Sun newspaper (here) first predicted that U2 will headline on Friday night of the Festival. The Irish rockers have tour dates the other side of the Atlantic in Alberta, Canada on Wednesday 23rd June and Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the USA on the Sunday 27th June and so a date in the UK looked unlikely, however the newspaper says that Bono and Co. will be sandwiching in a headline show at Worthy Farm, in Pilton on Friday 25th June.
The newspaper said, that a source has told them, "Everyone is over the moon that the deal has been done.
Michael really wanted a huge name for the 40th anniversary and the fact U2 have never played Glastonbury in their 32-year career only adds to the mystique.
In fact Eavis has been asking them for a while now and really stepped up the effort this year. This could be an iconic moment."
Festival organiser Michael Eavis claimed to have booked one of the headliners for next year's Glastonbury Festival at last February's NME Awards, saying, "I've booked the Friday headliner after talking to someone's agent an hour ago. It's the 40th anniversary in 2010, and we're also hoping to seal a really amazing anniversary headliner soon."
Earlier this year Bono said about Glastonbury Festival, "I know lots of people want us to play. It's something we're working up our whole life to do. We really, really want to do this."
Farmer Eavis has been quoted as saying there will be 'three or four superstars' and adding, "The expectations are really high and we're trying to get the best headliners in the world."
Only one other act is confirmed so far for the 40th anniversary of the Festival, but as usual eFestivals will bring you the very best-sourced rumours, allowing festival-goers to see who is playing long before the bands are formally announced - keep your eyes on the Glastonbury 2010 rumours, updated as we receive information.
Tickets have sold out for next year's Glastonbury Festival which runs for five full days from Wednesday 23rd until Sunday 27th June 2010 across a 1,000 acres of beautiful countryside at Worthy Farm, Somerset. There will be no more tickets on sale until sometime early in 2010.
