Festival founder Peter Gabriel will be taking part in a discussion at this month's WOMAD - World of Music, Arts and Dance festival held at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury, in Wiltshire. Gabriel will attend the event he founded over 30 years ago, on the Saturday 11.30am, to discuss two other long-running projects he's been involved with: Real World Records, who are celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year, and Bowers & Wilkins Society of Sound whose stage he will be talking upon with Mark Coles (BBC Radio 4, The Shed) and questions will be encouraged from the audience.
Real World Records was set-up by Gabriel to provide talented artists from around the world with access to state-of-the-art recording facilities and is now in its 25th year. To celebrate this landmark in September there will be the release of a 3CD retrospective box set.
This discussion aims to delveinto his initial motivations for starting the label, offer some first-hand insight into the history of the label and it's diverse roster of artists as well as explore the affect that his involvement in the label has had on him personally as a song-writer.
Conceived by Danny Haikin and Mike Large in 2006, Society of Sound is an online community which was launched in May 2008. Subscribers receive two studio-quality downloads each month picked by Peter Gabriel & Real World and the London Symphony Orchestra. During the talk Gabriel will discuss his thoughts on the collaboration with Society of Sound, their shared passion for supporting and nurturing new music and how a meeting between Peter and Danny Haikin at a B&W dealership in Bath kick started the partnership.
The line-up includes Sinead O'Connor, Youssou N'Dour, Manu Dibango (presenting his 8 Decades show), Alice Russell, Nitin Sawhney ONEZERO, Mulatu Astatke, Fat Freddy's Drop, Bassekou Kouyate, Goran Bregovic Wedding And Funeral Band, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, Mulatu Astatke, Oliver Mtukudzi & The Black Spirits, Trombone Shorty, Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, Tunng, Justin Vali & Ny Malagasy Orkestra, 9 Bach, Snarky Puppy, Debademba, Aar Maanta, Jus Now, Richard Thompson, Les Ambassadeurs, Amjad Ali Khan, Public Service Broadcasting, and more.
