Following the recently announced partnership with Music Declares Emergency, Reading and Leeds Festival have announced their onsite activity with the organisation for the 2022 festival alongside the ongoing sustainability initiatives. As part of Music Declares Emergency’s No Music On A Dead Planet campaign, the organisation will host an area in the main arena to encourage music fans to come together in the fight against climate change. Fans will be able to become a founding member of the Fan Club For Climate and pick up temporary tattoos to wear their message, whilst Music Declares Emergency representatives will be on hand to share information with fans about how they can get further involved to become part of the positive response to the climate crisis. Festival goers can also share their photos with Reading and Leeds social media accounts using the hashtag #NOMUSICONADEADPLANET for the chance to appear on the main stage screens at the festivals.
Reading and Leeds have also collaborated with Music Declares Emergency to launch the festival’s first ever Eco Campsite, where festival goers can choose to camp with a conscience and stay in a brand new, clean, green campsite and leave no trace of their attendance. The No Reading On A Dead Planet /No Leeds On A Dead Planet Campsite will offer like-minded people who want to make a difference a place to camp at the festival with others who live life with the planet in mind.
Reading & Leeds organisers Festival Republic are funding a new research project within Music Declares Emergency, with the aim to drive grid connections to UK festivals and begin the transition of the UK outdoor live sector to grid power. Such a transition will ultimately reduce carbon emissions for the sector in relation to temporary power generation. It marks a key moment in the transformation of the UK outdoor live music portfolio and reinforces the commitment of Festival Republic to playing a leading role in creating a greener and more sustainable future for live music in the UK and beyond.
Reading and Leeds Festival continue to make the festival even more sustainable, and regularly provide ticket holders with key messaging ahead of and during the festival about how to play their part in creating a positive and environmentally friendly future.
Reading and Leeds Festival said: "These green initiatives include a tent buying guide to advise festival goers about what type of tent to buy that will be reusable for many years to come, messaging to encourage music fans to take their tents home, advice to pack a reusable bottle to fill at free water refill points across the campsites and arena, deposit return scheme on cups and bottles, low-emission travel options including coach travel with the festival’s carbon-neutral travel partner Big Green Coach, carbon footprint rated menu options by the London School of Economics, working with environmental charities to host Green Teams on site to engage with the public and staff, and the entire event is to be powered by HVO biofuel this year, which emits 75-90% less carbon emissions."
The Youth Climate Justice Coalition will also bring their campaign to Reading and Leeds. There will be speeches, workshops, DJs and live shows held at the bus at Reading, as well as audience outreach at Leeds and a talk on the Alternative Stage.
