The dates for the 48th Brighton Festival are confirmed as from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 25th May 2014.

Brighton Festival is an annual showcase for theatre, music, dance, performance and books, from both local and international artists.

Line-up

Over the three-week Festival many of guest director’s Hofesh Shechter’s interests and passions will be explored in a wide-ranging programme which spans music, theatre, dance, visual art, film, literature and debate from a wide range of national and international companies and artists with 448 performances and 147 events in 34 venues across the city. In total there will be 37 premieres, exclusives and co-commissions and 26 free events.

The line-up includes Peaches, Emmylou Harris, Cat Power, Hauschka, Piano Automat Trio, Martin Creed Band, and Mind Trap. The UK premieres of Opus No.7 by Dmitry Krymov, and Ultima Vez’s Talk to the Demon, plus William Forsythe’s Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time No.2, Yinka Shonibare’s The British Library, international theatre companies Berlin and Vanishing Point, co-commission Sun, Wim Vandekeybus, Irvine Welsh in conversation with John Niven, Viv Albertine, David McCandless, Jeremy Deller.

As ever Brighton Festival kicks off with the Children’s Parade produced by Same Sky. Events for all the family this year include a UK premiere of Tanzfuchs Produktion’s Munch!, the UK premiere of Zoo, Thomas Hauert’s first piece for young people which is accompanied by a prepared piano soundtrack by John Cage, and on film the Cinema of Childhood - curated by Mark Cousins.

Throughout three weeks of entertainment the festival aims to bring great art to Brighton, and to harness the creative energy of the city to make great new art of its own. Other events include a full programme of visual arts & film, books and debate, classical music, dance & circus, programming for children, lunchtime concerts, outdoor events, and theatre.

Guest Director

The Guest Director of Brighton Festival is choreographer Hofesh Shechter.

It is said to attract an audience of over 500,000 and is a cultural extravaganza with performances taking place at venues all around the city including parks, churches, arts centres, and the beach.
