A week of events and activities promoting multiculturalism, fighting racism and valuing diversity. The week starts with the Opening Respect Party at the Timepiece nightclub, featuring Worldbeat on 26th June. On the same day, there's Respect Comedy at Three Fat Fish.
Friday night features a jazz, funk and hip-hop night, with London Elektricity plus special guests: hip-hop master, Rodney P; Cleveland Watkiss; Nicky Blackmarket; DJ Patife and Jelly Jazz.
The highlight of Exeter's Respect Week is at the Phoenix Arts Centre in Gandy Street on Saturday, with free multicultural entertainment from noon until around 5pm. This year, there's live music in the marquee from Nuala and the Retrobates, Circus Berzerkus, Plant Rainbow Super Jambo Jambo African Acrobats, Temple Dragon Kung Fu, White Rabbit Theatre, stalls, workshops, acoustic music, dance, Fair Trade food, family fun & more followed by an annual world music celebration from around 7pm onwards.
Saturday night features Misty in Roots, Baka Beyond, Street Heat, Dubblehead, Japanese power-and-precision drumming from Kagemusha Taiko, and folktronix from Tony Dale.
The full week incorporates many other Respect activities, with more music, film, poetry and comedy taking place all over the city of Exeter. Others taking part include the Northcott Theatre, Devon County Council, the Exeter Picture House and Westpoint, where the London Community Gospel Choir are among the artists performing.
The Respect movement started in London two decades ago, and events now take place across the country. Their motto is: All different, All equal...Respect!
