Glen Tilbrook
28th July 2000
Glen Tilbrook came on to the Aladdins Cave Stage on Saturday night to an enthusiastic audience. His brand of music and down to earth attitude fitted perfectly into the Guildford festival mood - light and airy and up for a laugh. He performed on his own with his acoustic guitar with a good deal of skill and confidence.
Tilbrook's set consisted in the main of old Squeeze hits which pleased the crowd a lot - most of them could remember the songs from the first time round. He opened up with 'Pulling Mussels From a Shell' and went on to play such classics as 'Up the Junction' and 'Take Me I'm Yours'. The audience cheered and danced as these bright and infectious tunes filled the air.
Guildford has been a festival of 'shows' and Glen Tilbrook likewise performed. He brought 20 people from the crowd on to the stage to perform 'Perfect Day', aping the BBC multi-star performance. It was great! The folks from the crowd performed brilliantly with Tilbrook's enthusiasm driving them on. The crowd cheered and laughed and sang along with verve.
In the encore it was audience participation time again when a young man came from the crowd to give a nervous performance with Tilbrook on the guitar. Again the crowd lapped it up and cheered for more. Unfortunately there was no more to come, but the crowd left happy and uplifted from a great performance by Glen Tilbrook who remained a professional throughout. Such a mad performance using the audience was carried off because of Tilbrook's great playing talent and superb songs.
