The debut album from Does It Offend You Yeah? is a raucous, riotous explosion of high energy noise underpinned by some of the fiercest beats this side of Trent Reznor's latest project. The difficulties present in recreating this in the live arena are numerous, but somehow DIOYY manage to live up to the promise of the longplayer, and in some cases, even improve on it.
What sets Does It Offend You Yeah? apart from their numerous contemporaries in the dance / rock crossover genre is the pure, unsurpassed energy which they bring to the table. Where others simply chuck in some synth and call it Nu-Rave, here we have a band who carve their sound from a seemingly impenetrable wall of noise.
As the sweating, sweltering crowd moves as one to the pulsing rhythm of Daft Punk-esque 'We Are Rockstars', it is impossible to resist the compulsion to move. The excitement in the darkened tent is tangible, and it is clear that this is what live music is meant to feel like. In most sets, this would be the highlight, if the band were lucky, Does It Offend You Yeah? are just beginning. 'Let's Make Out' and the tremendous 'Weird Science' are everything you could hope for, and by the time the criminally brilliant 'Battle Royale' kicks in, the crowd are completely and utterly at the band's mercy.
On a bill dominated by samey DJs and a weak indie showing, Does It Offend You Yeah? showed exactly how the crossover should be handled. Their set is immense, and they proved, once and for all, that they are a band that are impossible to ignore.
