Covered pitches has made a massive difference.

However there are plenty of other facts not considered - fitness levels, fielding skills, etc

Yeah, but Tendulka is a better batsman than Cook. Let's not start getting carried away.

Incidentally, in terms of averages, I always find it more telling to compare the individual's score with the rest of the side's score. Not as a rule though.
