It's not as simple as saying if it was too dark to play at 7.26 one day then it will also be at 7.26 the next day or the day after. Cloud cover plays a massive part in light meter readings

Realise light meter readings depend massively on cloud cover, my point was that Thursday evening was a cloudless evening, Sunday was a cloudless evening. Bad light was in both cases due to the setting of the sun rather than any other factors, therefore the times were going to be almost identical, which they were.

Ah, I see. Then your point is correct.

Would Clarke have been on at the umpires to take light meter readings had England been 9 wickets down and still requiring 50 runs for victory..?

My theory re the 11 / 10.30 / 11 starts; matches used to start at 11, then moved 30 mins earlier due to slow over rates, then grounds introduced floodlights so the start could safely be moved back to 11 without any worry about getting the overs in... oh.

p

If its too dark it's too dark...

Do you belve the players should continue to play if its too dark and unsafe for the players? And /or the ability to play the game to a resonance standard like see the ball clear enough to catch it is reduced beyond reasonable levels?

As frustrating as it was I think it was the right call by the umpires. Is was very dark.

I don't think play should continue if it's too dark for the players.

I don't think it was too dark for the players at the Oval.

Two very different things.

Having never faced a ball at 90mph its hard to have a definitive feeling on it but its looked way darker than normal so I can't really have a go at the umpires call.

Not being able to read Dar's mind it's hard to know what his thought process was, but it looked to me as if he followed the rules he's paid to implement, not whether conditions were too dangerous for the players.

twenty20 is for children and people with low attention spans...

One day cricket is alright to kill a boring day but it barely registers above twenty20 for me.

And then we have cricket. Wonderful test match cricket. The other two are just some bastard child incarnation that no one should really give a fuck about.

Completely agree.

Disturbingly. :P

Very surprised about Ballance getting a call up. I know he's been in form but I'd have thought they'd stick with one of the others.

Feel sorry for James Taylor. Keeps on being pulled back to the fringes then discarded.

Completely bemused by the lack of Onions, not that Rankin is a bad option by any means but Onions has been one of Durham's best bowlers in a championship winning season.

Looks like we're going to attempt to accelerate Stokes in as a potential all-rounder option. Not really convinced by him in the little I've seen but fair enough.

Not sure Carberry's a better option than Compton for a top-order batsman, but I can't see that either would be given a game short of an injury to the current top 3.

Seems like Australian Cricket don't want to pay for it,,, It comes down to the TV companies when its them paying for it I suppose.

Which seems ridiculous. Both that Aussie cricket aren't contributing to DRS, and that the TV companies are thus entrusted completely with the decision.
