Any runners here?

Well I've taken the plunge and entered my first marathon, in Edinburgh, in May 2010.

I'm going to be entering this too, and it'll be my first marathon as well. So far I've got a half marathon in 2005 under my belt, and a few 10k races. Aside from that I've been a weekend jogger for about the last year since knee problems, so it's all a bit daunting.

That sounds remarkably similar to how I felt when I entered the Berlin Marathon. The feeling only went about a month before the big day - the day I managed to get to the magical 20 mile mark on a training run. That was the first time I truly believed I could manage the distance.

Best of luck, you can do it.

Cheers fella. In a masochistic way, I'm quite looking forward to it (as well as being terrified!).

I have had to stop running. Without going into too many details on an open fourm, I have very badly damanged my back. I am not allowed to run for at least 5 months :-(

I was meant to be doing the GSR today, but watched it on TV instead. So I have gone from running 40 miles a week to doing nothing.

Still, I have so much more time!!!

Good running everyone.

That's real bad luck. Sounds like you hope to get back to it in the future, but can anything take its place meantime? Are other forms of exercise available to you?

Had a 9 day work-enforced break from running that I finally ended today. I was slow and groggy. Hardly the preparation when my first ever half is 2 weeks away. Running every other day now planned.

My local half opens for registrations on Monday. It's in March and I was thinking having a goal to work towards would help me keep up my running. I got as far as running 4.5 miles semi-regularly but got bored and stopped a couple of months ago, switching to gym classes for exercise instead.

How do you guys keep yourselves motivated to train? :S

Anyone else there for the Great South? Was a great atmosphere and much bigger roadside crowds than I thought would be there.

Was my first GS so I was quite modest in my estimations as to how long it would take me so I was quite near the back of the pack to begin with but I ended up finishing 1246 with a very reasonable 1:17:22 which if I wasn't spending most of my time planning overtaking I reckon I could have shaved a couple of minutes off.

The last mile was the only choppy one (lots of wind by the esplanade). The weather was absolutely glorious so I picked a good year for it to be my first - people say it notoriously sh*ts it down every year! I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who fancies an intro into 10 milers as it's relatively flat and got a great atmos

Definitely having goals motivate me. The thought of being in agony during the marathon because I hadn't done enough training was enough to get me out even when it was cold/wet/windy etc.

Also find training alone tough. So finding a friend at a similar level to you helps. Letting someone else down was a big motivator for me on nights I otherwise would probably have stayed in.

Joining a running club can help. If you make friends, you want to go out training, if only to catch up with the friends you have made you otherwise wouldn't see.

Finally, I found that once I was into a routine (during marathon training 4 nights and one weekend morning) i used to get annoyed at myself if I missed a session. The feel good factor you get after completing each session I was missing if I missed a session.

Good luck.

P.S. I am really struggling for motivation at the moment!

I was running with a club which was good in that it got me out and around different and more challenging routes. But I was always at the back :D and lacked the motivation to go out twice more each week to get better. I am cross training like mad and would like to maintain that, so would have to go running in the mornings and maybe with the group on Monday evenings. Maybe I'll work til Christmas on getting back up to 4.5 miles and then go back out with the club in January. Thanks for the tips :D

Anyone got any experince of the Bath half? I'm looking for a good half-marathon for the spring so had a look at the course for the great west and it's looks pretty boring (I hate any runs where you have to do laps - kind of demotivating)

Any suggestions for a half-m that's in spring with a good crowd?

I have not done Bath, but its 2 laps, and is reported to be fast. I have a number for it, but probably not running.

Reading has a couple of inclines/hills, but is a fast course. It is will supported. I have run Reading twice. Again I have a number, but probably not running. Reading also finishes in the football stadium, and running into there is fantastic. My preference would be Reading, as I have heard a few not so good things about Bath. But its each to their own choice. I have a very long term injury, but would hope to run/walk Reading if I can by then.

I have never run the bath 1/2 marathon, but supported it following a few mates round the course, and there is always good support round the whole course. As expected for Bath, there are quite a few hills, but it is a pretty good course from what people who have ran it have told me.
