End of the Road 2009 (!)

Love that optimism, G-man! I'd be happy with that, I must say.

Had my own little EOTR revival last week - a stripped down Woodpigeon and Miserable Rich played a pokey little dive in Newcastle. EXCELLENT evening. I was really impressed that the packed house (on a Monday!) hushed up throughout MR's opening set and me companion was swept away by them, having ignored all the links I'd sent him to prepare himself.

They were separated by a great little band from South Shields that I'd never heard of, to my shame, The Minotaurs. Well worth a listen, I reckon, and would sound canny anywhere in the Larmer Tree Gardens.

FLEET FOXES and EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY have been confirmed for headline slots at the End of the Road Festival 2009, with other confirmations including Okkervil River, Magnolia Electric Co, The Broken Family Band, The Acorn, The Dodos and Mumford and Sons.

Little need be said here about Fleet Foxes except that it’s hard to think of a better place to see them play than the leafy Garden Stage, with a glass of local cider and a peacock meandering about nearby. They'll be headlining on the Saturday, with Explosions in the Sky taking the Friday slot.

In alphabetical order, the full list of artists announced today is as follows:

The Acorn

The Boy Least Likely To

The Broken Family Band

Dan Sartain

Dent May

The Dodos

Explosions in the Sky

Fleet Foxes

J Tillman

The Lost Brothers

Magnolia Electric Co

Malcolm Middleton

Mumford and Sons

The Mummers

Ohbijou

Okkervil River

Papercuts

They join a lineup already including: Alela Diane, Archie Bronson Outfit, Bob Log III, Charlie Parr, Efterklang, Howlin Rain, Joe Gideon and the Shark, Lay Low, The Low Anthem, Motel Motel, Peter Broderick, Sparrow & The Workshop, Steve Earle, Tallest Man on Earth, This Frontier Needs Heroes, William Elliot Whitmore and Whispertown 2000.

Amazing ! Looks like the best line up yet. Can't wait till September.

Really really chuffed with the line up so far

To the person (? shoebox) who doesn't get Fleet Foxes - I didn't really get them either - until I saw them live at the Custard Factory last Oct - and they were incredible, probably one of my favourite gigs of the past year or so.

Also v excited re The Acorn - saw them supporting Elbow a few days ago and they were fab.

Okkervil River, Dan Sartain, Malcolm Middleton.........

All shaping up to be wonderful, yet again.

So, Sun night...... I suppose I could put up with The National. Or The Decemberists. Or The Flaming Lips. Or Midlake :P

Aaahh...Patrick Watson...

Reminds me of my "embarassing moment" at Latitude last year:

Basically I had seen Mr.Watson supporting and playing with The Cinematic Orchestra a few months before and if you know "Ma Fleur" it is all pretty gorgeous and laid back. He also did some of his songs a capella out in the audience and all was very magical and mellow...anyway...shoot forward to Latitude 2008 and I was outside the UNCUT tent talking to a couple of "older" people and they asked about Patrick Watson. Even though I had the album I described PW as mellow, singer-songwriter, background chill type music...they were very intrigued and decided to hang around...

Little did I know that PW would come out with some megawatt experimental stuff that may very well have damaged the more mature ear! They MUST have thought I was an idiot or at least a musical try-hard type...oh the shame.

Sorry to ramble...just reminded me of a painful moment! :P
