Slipknot become bigger than Metallica

I was looking for knebworth news on and stumble across this from one of the pantomime 'percussionists' from gimmick metalers Slipknot.

I personally think the only way Slipknot would overtake metallica is if there tour buses ended up on the same stretch of road.

Metallica are a credible metal band with wide reaching appeal. There early material has aged really well and is truely classic.

Slipknots however come off as a kids band and although their fans may range in age, there main fan base is kids. As a result I think a lot of their fans will out grow them and when listening back to their material, realise how much it has dated. I know I did.

Metallicas tracks are varied rather than relying on one sound and repeating it! Especially with the earlier material.

And love em or hate em, Metallica have personalities and issues that make them real. Slipknot lack this aspect due to wearing masks and matching boiler suits.

Am I wrong? Is there an appeal to slipknot that evades me? And is it an appeal that will see them as true contenders.

If they are to contend with Metallica they have a lot of work to do, I think the side projects might need to go on hold! ;)

Guns N' Roses were bigger than both.

It's debatable who is right now though between GnR and Metallica. Axl & co. headlined the weekend at Download 2006, but more people saw Metallica it seemed.

If Slash, Duff and Matt rejoined GnR then they'd clearly be the biggest rock band around.

Wait a minute...I've overlooked Coldplay...

i can't comment as i wasn't alive when appetite was out (that's how relevant gnr are now), but i take comfort in the fact that metallica always put on an amazing show, and i have mates who don't like metal at all, but saw metallica at leeds and said that hands down they were the best band of the weekend. guns and roses on the other hand, are well known for being a liability (why am i saying gnr when i mean axl  ), and by the time chinese democracy came out it didn't change the world, just proved that the name would be dragged through the mud until they've leached all the cash out of it they can.

i saw stone sour at a fest one year and they were really good, i wasn't even a fan just got dragged along as machine head were on after them. Corey does look a bit unhinged in real life though lol. Probably helped with it being a night set and the crowd were properly into it.

And i'm the same way about metallica, was very happy to see a return to form with death magnetic after the angry but not all that good st anger (probably not a good idea to have therapy and record an album at the same time lol).
