Neil Young just a little dull and somewhat painful on the ears?

...& the godfather statement doesn't necessarily imply he invented any of those genres, just he was highly respected within them.....did don corleone invent the gangster?

Think it's just saying more, that Young was highly influentual within those genres...which he undoubtably was and still is.

people keep trying to make their point with F all to back it up.

Generally the term godfather is used to describe someone who popularised a genre to a wider audience,

So used in the correct term, how many genre's other than grunge did he godfather?

Peache.....I dont think you will be surrounded by nuggets, real Neil young fans are not getting involved because its hard to justify ludicrous statements.

Cant wait for the evidence on the godfather of Folk, Rock , Country & Western .Blues, and whatever else he plays.

For me, seeing NY will probably be the highlight of this years Glastonbury.

Hearing you guys arguing about him above made me smile - when I was seventeen, and listening to Rust Never Sleeps, my parents moaned and groaned: "Why do you listen to this rubbish? He can't sing, his guitar's all distorted and too loud, his quieter songs aren't so bad, but I can't stand his voice."

Thirty years on, I'm still listening to him.

And my kids are saying....."Why do you listen to this rubbish? He can't sing, his guitar's all distorted and too loud, his quieter songs aren't so bad, but I can't stand his voice."

And I like his new songs too...

I'm not going down this road any more, it's dead end anyway

;)

agree..... what's the problem again??

Are you referring to his very recent cover of A Day In The Life? there's a long list of songs that he could close his set with. Covers.. plural? I've seen him a few times, and I've never seen him cover anyone's songs, I'd be slightly disappointed if he didn't do ADITL

yep, that's it.. he's just the same as REM...

Well to put the thread back on topic.....

Have to say I agree with original Poster. Ive never paid too much attention to him, other than having it on as background music previously, but since the rumours started i have been trying to listen as much as possible to his works.

I have to say i just cant get along with it. Seems almost tedious and dreary at times....although of course there are one or two class tunes.....

I for one wont be rushing to the front of the Pyramid for his performance, and will probably look for something a little more uplifting.....

Still Glastonbury would be a pretty boring place if we all wanted to watch the same performances all the time. Just because someone does/ doesnt like something doesnt make it right or wrong !

Its crazy how abusive people are being to each other, over the simple matter of whether they like Neil Young's music or not.

Everyone has different music tastes, its completely against the spirit of Glastonbury to insult someone just cause they like different music to you.

OUCH !!!.....Now i am a big fan of Mr Young, and do hope the rumors of his playing are true, it would be another Leonard Cohen moment for me. while i do admit sometimes his voice my be a bit painfull to the ears, only in his latter years though..His skills as a songwriter more than make up for this. I will be there as close to the front as i can get with my Zimmer  ...as for the painful to the ears comments...i can think of many others far worse...but thats another thread

I've always found that North American (I mean that geographically, not politically) acts always seem to inspire some vitriol amongst music fans here in Blighty. Take The Doors in their day, and to this day. Half of us Brits love 'em and the other half hate them. Well, 40%, 40% and 10% who've never heard of 'em, just like with Neil Young. Love him or loathe him, 10% of music fans have amazingly still not heard of him. Bizarre. If Young were British, he'd have a knighthood, hell, probably a seat in the Lords and criticising his talent would be tantamount to pissing on the Queen.:D

I've seen Young just twice, and both were last year (Manchester & The Hop Farm), but like many Neil Young fans, I'm still below the age of 30. Young isn't exclusively a bringer of the chequered blanket and thermos crowd; he brings kids like me to the show as well. As evidenced at last year's Manchester performance when Nine Black Alps were sat in front of me, crying, yes, crying, at the sight and sound of the great man. Crying happy that is. Not 'cos their ears hurt! :D And then down at the Hop Farm, I ended up with Primal Scream, Rufus Wainwright, Supergrass and Laura Marling stood in front of me, watching in awe. If so many other bands & artists are into Young, I think it speaks for itself.

And what now - plus 40 albums thusfar? Gotta be something in that 'mistuned' voice of his. Guess Young's like Guinness and Jazz music - aquired tastes both, but once you're hooked, you're hooked.

But please, let's not write off Young as only having appeal to the over 50 crowd (who are good people btw). My generation love him too. I sincerely sincerely hope he's playing. The prospect of Young at this festival is a good chunk of the reason I bought a ticket. That, and the sheer pleasure of working as security at Glastonbury last year. An easier job there cannot be! Not one aggressive word out of anyone directed towards me, despite being dressed up in luminous colours and having to tell people what they can't do. Although a villager did try and run me over becuase I wouldn't let her drive the wrong way down a one-way street...lol Shame about her getting her wristband confiscated... :) Happy memories. Anyway, I drift off topic, but suffice to say, having never previously gone to Glastonbury before last year, it's as much the niceness of the crowd as the Neil Youngness possibilities that have persuaded me to fork out the money this year. Better crowd than the tits at Leeds anyway. :D

Right.

To you're orginal question; No. He is not dull.

And to back that up.. I saw him last year when i was 14 at hop farm.

not to brag, but i have seen many bands and been to a few festivals (bestival 05, reading 06, glasto 08, hop farm 08) and he was the best artist i saw.. he blew supergrass and primal scream off the stage, and im a big fan of both of them bands.

i wasn't expecticing much, the ussual "rock" show.

He was bloody amazing!

and if he does play, which i hope he does.. you'll see what i mean!

;)
