Top 10 Glastonbury sets

I've only been to 4 so a bit more limited than most but I'll give it a go.

1. Elbow - Other Stage 2008. (Perfect weather, listening to my favourite band of last year at my favourite place to be (not the other stage in particular! but you know what I mean!))

The rest in no particular order...

Paul McCartney - Pyramid 04

Art Brut - New Tent 05 (fun!)

Neon Neon - Other Stage 08 (fun! x 2)

Arcade Fire - Other Stage 07

The White Stripes - Pyramid 05 (Great sound from 2 people)

Battles - Park 08 (disappointingly cut short)

Some bloke playing 2 acoustic guitars in the Tiny Tea Tent on the Wednesday night 08 (The first time I'd been in there, it was like someone's really cool living room with cushions and nice lighting, I was nicely drunk and it was a lovely evening. Did anyone else see him?)

Los Campesinos! - Other stage 08 (the singer seems a bit of a d*ck, but great music)

Hope of the States - New Tent 04

I've noticed lacking from 07 and heavily 08 influenced - all probably due to weather and memory loss!

Ok Time Started thinking about this...... 20:42

And in no particular order .....

>Levellers (Avalon, 04) always a fave!

>White Stripes (Pyramid 05) - Only time I managed to squeeze to the front for a headline

>Hot Chip (Other, 08) What my better half looked like tops this...crazy stalker fan type get up

>Paul McCartney (Pyramid, 04) Cliche maybe but where else for Hey Jude and everyone waving flares

>Battles (Park, 08) -As mentioned earlier such a shame it got cut short....but certainly glad i went there and not Jay Z!

>Arcade Fire (Other, 07) After all that rain, the sun was setting and the sky was a gorgeous colour

>John Fogarty (Jazz 07) Another glasto beauty....randomly passing by (for pear cider... ahem :D) and ended up dancing around like a loony to classics

>Seasick Steve (Pyramid 08) just a glasto classic

>Brian Wilson (Pyramid 05) Sunshine...songs about sunshine!

>Muse (Pyramid 04) Stood a foot deep in mud and about to drive all the way back to hull through the night but didn't want to miss the end

Maybe we should do top ten worst to? Winehouse's set from last year was truly atrocious....she didn't even sing properly!

Time finished 21:01.... 19 minutes of reminiscing glory! :D

A top 12, picking 4 from each Glasto I've been to...

REM, Pyramid, 2003 (possibly the best festival set I've ever seen)

Polyphonic Spree, Pyramid, 2003 (pure unadulterated joy)

Yes, Jazzworld, 2003 (an extra long set on a sunny Sunday afternoon)

Arthur Brown, Avalon, 2003 (what a voice, and a nice bloke)

The Killers, Pyramid, 2005 (discovered them here, they pretty much peaked for me that day)

Stereo MCs, Dance West, 2005 (a true Glastonbury pleasant surprise)

Hayseed Dixie, Acoustic Tent, 2005 (one of many times but always good)

Ukulele Orchestra, Acoustic Tent, 2005 (first glimpse of a great live act)

Brakes, Leftfield, 2007 (beats the set on the Other Stage for its intimacy)

The Hold Steady, John Peel, 2007 (good to see a band really enjoying themselves)

The Electric Soft Parade, Guardian Lounge, 2007 (and one that doesn't give one any more)

Kasabian, Pyramid, 2007 (always get the most out of any crowd)

Blimmin' 'eck I thought I was the only one on this board who actually thought they were any good! Not quite in my top ten, but I really enjoyed their set. As I pretty much lost interest in them after their 2nd album I liked the fact that they drew heavily from definitely maybe. But their set has been picked to pieces so much by this board that I'm not gonna go down that path and state why they were good again...

In no particular order...

2004 Pyramid Stage - Macca. I was close enough to the stage to feel the heat from the flames during Live And Let Die. An awesome set from one of the most famous and influential men who has ever, or will ever live. Monumental! The only downside was having to endure the AWFUL Black Eyed Peas to claim my spot.

2002 Pyramid Stage - Doves. Hot sunshine. Lots of friends there and perfect music for the perfect situation. Saw them on The Other Stage in '99 and they were awesome then too. Can't wait to see them again this year (i'm assuming they'll be on)

2002 The Other Stage - Mercury Rev. The Dark Is Rising + evening sunshine = great gig. another perfect moment!

2002 The Other Stage - Groove Armada. I liked them but wasn't overly arsed about watching them but it was another stonker. Totally got the crowd going. Richie Havens coming on for Going Back To My Roots was very special indeed.

2004 Pyramid Stage - Wilco. Living in the northeast of the country, I rarely get to see bands of his calibre. I love Wilco and they never disappointed. Was sunny too (notice a link here?) I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is one of the best songs i've ever heard at Glastonbury.

2000 New Tent - Elliott Smith. Awesome set. Even throwing up outside the tent due to a combination of too much cider and a gigantic hog roast sarnie didn't stop me enjoying this one

2000 Pyramid Stage - David Bowie. Superb. Don't need to explain why

2000 Pyramid Stage - Pet Shop Boys. I love them but not the sort of band I would ever have considered going to see live unless they were on at a festival. Thankfully, they were!

2008 Acoustic Tent - Amsterdam. Superb atmosphere, superb songs. Vastly underrated band and lovely people too. Deserve to be much bigger than they are.

2008 Acoustic Tent - Glenn Tilbrook and The Fluffers. Admittedly, I was at the happy stage of drunk but had a great singalong. Tempted was particularly ace!

Special mentions to...

Crowded House, Seasick Steve, Ben Folds and Martha Wainwright last year. All ace!!!

Hmm.... This one's fun

1 Banco de Gaia '95 (ultimate bliss followed by ultimate low finding (or not as is the case) that my tent had been stolen)

2 Brian Wilson '05 (sun sun sun in a gloomy weekend)

3 Orb '93 (nuff said - Alex Paterson the genius)

4 Kirsty MacColl '92 (tip top performance and much missed)

5 Cardiacs '00 (insanity in the Greenpeace tent)

6 Macca '04 (na na na na na na na.......)

7 Bjork '07 (goosebumps)

8 Johnny Cash '94 (Voice was going that day and yet he still sounded great. Still have the bootleg bought from the old stall an hour after the gig)

9 Back to the Planet '95 (Somewhere in a tent in the green fields - couldn't tell you to this day)

10 The Levellers '05 ("They didn't want us on the Main Stage" - more the fool they....)

Can I have more?

11 Suzanne Vega '89 (the death threat gig - how did she do it?)

12 Elbow '08 (An audience moved to tears. Criminal that they are not being mentioned for the Pyramid this year)

13 Orbital '04 (A good time had by all..... I think)

And a special mention for Billy Bragg. Always a good turn. Reminds me of meeting a couple from the US watching him play and me telling them how great he was and them agreeing. Just before he played the intro to "Help Save the Youth of America" <_<

Looking to add to the list in '09. Bring it on..... :P

1. Paul McCartney - Pyramid Stage 2004 - the best performance I have EVER seen anywhere. Awesome.

2. Buddy Guy - Jazzworld 2008 - a great evening of singalong Blues with the company of Brothers Cider at my favourite stage. And it was warm.

3. Elbow - Other Stage 2008 - hearing One Day Like This with the sun setting behind us is just a perfect Glasto moment.

4. Arcade Fire - Other Stage 2007 - I was fed up being wet and cold, but an hour of this sublime set made me feel dry and warm. Rebellion (Lies) was just beautiful

5. John Butler Trio - Pyramid Stage 2005 - never heard of them before, and just as THAT rain finally stopped, their sound hit me and I drifted over to have a listen. One word - WOW. I haven't seen them since though <_<

6. Seasick Steve - Pyramid Stage 2008 - another classic feelgood set from Steve - the bit when he got the girl out of the crowd to sing Walking Man was awesome. A great showman.

7. David Bowie - Pyramid Stage 2000 - to sing Heroes, Ziggy Stardust, Life On Mars with 60,000 other people just doesn't happen every day. A dream come true.

8. Pigeon Detectives - John Peel Stage 2007 - gone off them since, but this was a great, high-octane performance with a great show from the frontman. Sadly nowhere near aas good on the much larger Other Stage 12 months later.

9. John Fogarty - Jazzworld 2007 - I was stood on a plastic sheet to fend off the mud, as it was seriously hindering my dancing to this genius performance, especially the madness that was Bad Moon Rising.

10. Doves - Pyramid Stage 2005 - I have a photo of their set as they were playing Satellites and I just remember being blissfully happy. I wasn't even that drunk at the time.

Other notable sets that just miss out:

The Bees - Jazzworld 2007

Seth Lakeman - Acoustic Stage 2008

Franz Ferdinand - The Park 2008

Coldplay - Pyramid Stage 2005

I Am Kloot - Acoustic Stage 2005

Willie Nelson - Pyramid Stage 2000

Counting Crows - Pyramid Stage 2000
