This Sonisphere thing

I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes, and I've just noticed tickets for this Sonisphere festival have gone on sale: www.sonispherefestivals.com

They've announced Metallica and Linkin Park so far (among others), and the whole thing happens at Knebworth, on 1 - 2 August. It seems to be a Europe-wide thing, with festivals in other countries too.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? They seem to be pitching it as a direct competitor to Reading and Leeds (although it's a different weekend) - I'm sure their website says something about not packing the arena full of stages so you keep missing stuff (but I can't find it now). That certainly sounded like a dig at Reading.

I can't help but think Reading and Leeds are too well-established to be too worried about this new festival, but it sounds like whoever's behind it (any ideas?) know's what they're doing.

Anyway, just a random post really... anyone considering going to this in addition to (or instead of?!!) Reading / Leeds?

Cheers,

John.

Its already dragged me away from Reading, and a few others of the 13 of us that normally do reading will defect once the lineup is announced for reading, and the additions are made to sonisphere.

my mates are all heavy rock oriented, and have always been quite well catered for, if its radiohead, kol, and arctic monkeys as rumoured they might dump it.

I normally do a day at download and/or a weekend at leeds but mainly when metallica are playing so Sonisphere gets my vote. It seemed pricey and a bit of the unknown but peer pressure from my mates soon convinced me to go!!

I feel the aim of this festival is right up my street. I'm not interested in the kind of variety 3 stages has to offer. I just want to stand there drinking beer and be spoon fed the best line up possible! And that looks like it will do that! Shame it's not at the MK bowl actually!! :P

Sonisphere is the only festival I'm 100% certainly going to this year.

Want to do Lowlands because that's usually Reading/Leeds plus a few heavier bands, but there are cost and persuasion issues there, more so if the Channel Tunnel doesn't sort itself out (I'm under 25 so it's normally very cheap for me, having to book summer flights would make it too expensive an option).

Have my Reading early bird booked but if the rumours don't improve a little bit (minimum requirement of Radiohead/KoL not being the heavy band) that'll be for sale.

I fear for reading this year, first year I havent been for 8 years. and I decided to give it a miss before I knew the rumours. my mates might all still go, but I'm glad I jumped ship for this - sonisphere looks like it might just be what I'm looking for, and I managed to get a hotel room as well. camping is good, but you cant beat a proper bed.

I've seen reading decline year on year since I started going. its far too full, and the stages arent big enough / too close together. I used to enjoy chillin on the grass in the afternoon, and for the last 3 years you couldnt sit anywhere without getting trampled.

Sonisphere is more in competition with Download than Reading. Im doing Download, I might do Sonisphere as well depends what AC/DC do in terms of Reading. I wouldn't mind seeing Metallica (again) but I REALLY want to see Linkin Park! I think Sonisphere is expensive though, the same price as Download for the same money. I'll think about it.
