Exclusive: The Flaming Lips set for RockNess headline slot

AMERICAN band The Flaming Lips are set to spice up RockNess with a wacky headline set.

The new wave rockers are the latest act to be signed to the threeday event, and will close the main stage on the first night.

Famed for their weird and wonderful live performances, the group have vowed to wow fans with another show-stopping set.

Festival director Jim King said: "The Flaming Lips' performances are always unique and fit right in to the ethos of RockNess."

Hailed by Q magazine as one of the 50 Bands to See Before You Die, past Lips' gigs have included elaborate costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections and complex light shows.

Frontman Wayne Coyne also surfs across the crowd in a mansized plastic bubble.

Joining the US band are Welsh wonders the Super Furry Animals, who are releasing a new album in April, so fans can expect to hear a mix of old and new hits.

Up-and-coming indie stars The Wombats will also be there.

The trio narrowly missed on out the best UK & Ireland Act award at last year's MTV Europe Awards to Leona Lewis.

The first wave of electronic acts have also been revealed.

David Guetta will hit the main stage and top DJs Pete Tong, Crookers and Brodinsky will play on the Saturday.

Other acts confirmed include Erol Alkan, Rob da Bank, DJ Yoda and Radio 1 star Zane Lowe.

Jim King added: "The Super Furries are festival favourites and we've been after them for a couple of years, so it's really brilliant they are with us this year.

"Pete Tong, Erol Alkan, Zane Lowe, Rob da Bank, Crookers and David Guetta, mean the famous Rock Ness party vibe will continue and we'll definitely have the biggest party weekend of 2009."

More than 100 acts and DJs are promised for the 35,000-capacity festival, which will take place on June 12-14.

Already, the Razz has revealed The Prodigy, Biffy Clyro, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal and Orbital are to play the main stage at this summer's festival.

Tickets are available in person from Mania, Inverness, Ironworks, Inverness, One Up Aberdeen, Grouchos, Dundee, Ticket Scotland, Glasgow and Edinburgh and Ripping, Edinburgh.

Whilst a little surprised as to the Flaming Lips headlining, this is an amazing anouncement, it shows a great deal of imagination and creativity. I look forward to seeing what the flaming lips make of rockness.

Shit, Flaming Lips and Orbital headlining. This line-up is tempting for a trip to Scotland. [and now ryanair are flying from Malta to Edinburgh which makes it more feasable]

The hard part is, to convince Maltese punters to come along ;)

Pretty decent especially The Flaming Lips and Crookers. The Wombats on the other hand can get tae f*ck! lol gotta keep the indie kids happy I suppose. Quite looking forward to Zane low, he's got a well ecclectic music taste so would be interesting to see what he plays, sure it wouldn't be a bad show.

Does anyone know which day the SFA are playing?? Thats my main fundamental reason for going although the rest of teh line up is as desperate dan would say"mighty fine". Hopefully its the flaming lips and sfa on the same day.

Can get a ticket though till I know which day as will probably be only allowed 1 day although all 3 would be great!!
