zero000
Fantastic cover. Apparently Stevie Nicks really likes it also. A great cover by the Manics! Though it's been covered by about a million other people, it's a great pop song.
Purple Monkey
Hendrix. All day long. The best cover of all time. Not to say that Dylans is bad, quite the opposite. It's so good because Hendrix managed to make something great so much better.
Banana Co
Didn't Dylan himself say Hendrix improved All Along The Watchtower?

grumpyhack
Thank you whoever resurrected this thread, I think there is a distinction between someone simply covering a song by doing a broadly similar note for note copy and someone reinterpreting a song. In the past composers wrote songs and lots of people performed them - take Beethoven as an example. In more recent times songs have become associated with the first performer to have a hit with that song. A really great song can be interpreted by lots of people - for example Yesterday by Lennon and McCartney. The same is true of lots of Dylan material. One of my favourites is Girl From The North Country. Dylan wrote it, Walter Trout did a new arrangement of it and his protege Danny Bryant is doing the Walter Trout arrangement of it here. Show of Hands, a great folk band who are on Avalon this year, have also produced a complete album of covers (called Covers) where they offer their interpretations of some classics. This is their version of The Stereophonics 'Dakota' Edited May 12, 2011 by grumpyhack
The Nal
the bit at about 50" in, where he interrupts himself saying "I'd like to bore you for about 6 or 7 minutes, and do a little thing..." and he can't stop himself playing.. the look of joy in his face... "if you can excuse me for a minute, just let me play my guitar... right?".. just sublime

The Nal
As one of the posters said: Why is the music out of time? Why is there a slowly rotating pink diamond in the middle of the screen? Why does he have such a blank expression? Why are there psychedelic patterns in the background? Why was this posted on YouTube? Who is this guy? I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ANY MORE. grumpyhack
The pink reference above reminds me of another great 'alternative version' - Frijid Pink's take on House of the Rising Sun. As with Hendrix, they took an established standard and gave it a completely different feel. Or you can have the John Otway version Edited May 26, 2011 by grumpyhack

The Nal
Dunno if Ive posted this before. My favourite Dylan cover. And band with a lead singer called "Randy California" gets my vote. He died from drowning after rescuing his son from the ocean. His son survived.

grumpyhack
At the risk of a row I also enjoy a good tribute band from time to time. If the original band is no more (Beatles) or rarely touring (Fleetwood Mac) then a tribute band is the closest you'll get to the live experience. I saw Fleetwood Bac the other week and they put on a great show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW2V2bjhR9g And bands like Limehouse Lizzy are always worth catching Edited October 26, 2011 by grumpyhack
