russycarps
my most hated cover versions: Jeff Buckley doing Hallelujah. The amount of people that say it is better than len cohens version makes my blood boil. Go jump in a river you warbly voiced tit. Metallic doing The Mercy Seat. The original by nick cave and the bad seeds is 10000000000000 times better, and probably one of the best songs ever. If I ever feel like being outraged I go and read the comments on youtube. It makes me pound my keyboard in impotent rage. Metallic are gash. Edited October 27, 2011 by russycarps
grumpyhack
Here's a cover version to relish - Welsh band Racing Cars and their version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The guitar solo from Graham Williams (particulrly from about 6 minutes in) is magnificent. They were a very talented band who sadly no longer perform as a full band due to health issues for some members. Unfortunately they were labelled as 'one hit wonders' after releasing "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" which was actually untypical of most of their songs. All their material was original with the exception of this one song, which they admit at the start was a cover. Enjoy (I hope)
The_Amazing_Oblong
I don't mind a cover from an established band paying homage to their musical influences. Normally established bands have already set out their style and can bring that to the material. Not keen on covers that just basically recreate the original note for note, what's the point ? So in this vein my contribution to well done covers is The Flaming Lips & Stardeath and the White Dwarves (ft Henry Rollings) cover of The Dark Side of the Moon. Being both a Lips and Floyd fan I really didn't think I would like this. So much so that even after having the album given to me I flat refused to listen to it. Only after a few mates, whose musical tastes are similar to mine, recommended it did I finally succumb. I think it's every bit as good the original in it's own way. The Lips have kept their funkiness and really have made a great job of paying homage to one of their heroes.

The Nal
Alright, I'm shamelessly plugging my younger brothers talents here but hes great. Here is he covering Emerald by Thin Lizzy in 2001 when he was 17. Check out the solo starting at 40 seconds. And here he is (far right looking like Keyser Soze) from the Vibe for Philo this year covering Out in the Fields. The dual Lizzy guitar starts at about 3.20. airds
Just found this thread/forum, and had a quick read through and I cant believe no one has mentioned this When people complain about cover versions my answer is "Two words......Step On" I see Patti Smith got a mention early, this is a great cover she also does great versions of My Generation and Gloria My rule of thumb is a cover version has to better or different, simple as that If you are after a good cover LP, try getting this, I loved this as a kid, and since it was MFP it cost about £1.89 from the local COOP http://tralfaz-archi...ious/we_do.html The Slits followed by The Stranglers, excellent also while Im rambling on this is a great site for info on covers http://www.secondhandsongs.com

Ed209
I'm sure someone's mentioned easy star all stars. Some of their stuff is a bit hit or miss, but this is an absolute gem

Sparticus
John Mayer covering free fallin by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, this is what covers are all about in my book, have fun with the song and try and tell the story in a different way. eFestivals
Hes no Sinatra, sure. Theres worse out there. That's not what I was meaning. He's famous as a great guitarist rather than as a singer. He's pretty much dropped out of sight over the passing decades, but he used to be one of the names that was held up as a great.
