Tent Condition

A few weeks ago I was discussing tents.

A situation has recently arisen, where me and a friend have been offered a decent tent by friend's brother. This tent is 4-man and cost him around £150 - which is probably a lot more than we would have spent on a tent of our own. The agreement with the tent is; we can have it, free for the weekend, but he wants it back - if it gets damaged, then we fix it - if we can't fix it, we buy a new one.

So the dilemma - what are the chances that the tent gets damaged (or muddy to the point where it's not worth bringing it back in the car). Either I can buy a tent for £70 or so and we use that - or I save £70 and get one free  (which is a better tent than I would've bought myself) but with a potential risk of it costing me £150. B)

What are the odds that the tent won't get damaged? B)

Has anyone had any history with tents often getting broken or do you generally use a tent until your sick of it?

Any advice appreciated. B)

Alex.

I'd buy your own m8, you can get a decent 4 man one for under £100. It depends on what type of tent it is i suppose .. some are more flimsy than others ... buy your own ( a decent 1 ) and you can use it again & again. If it gets damaged you will not have to worry about paying anyone.

I take my Kath Kidston flowery tent to loads of festivals including Glasto and although it is

white and flowery it has always survived fine.

The main thing I would say is , never camp next to or near a path. They alway's get muddied

or dusty to hell.

If you camp somewhere in the middle of your chosen spot , you should be fine !

hmm, i'd get my own.

I'm gonna buy my own 4 man tent & share it with 2 mates, but hopefully it'll be in good enough condition to bring back.

my sister has offered to borrow me hers but i don't want to take the risk as it was expensive.

the one I'm gonna get is around £40, i hope it will hold up!

get your own - that way you wont have to spend all weekend worrying about it or panicking when you get a speck of dirt on it. you can get 4 man tents for £50 and they're fairly good quality, and the added bonus is you won't worry too much abut wrecking it because it belongs to you.

I've used the same tent for the last four years. It does two other fests each year as well. Needs a re-check each year at the start of the season for splitting poles and I take a few spares and a repair kit just in case. Oh and always take gaffer tape which will fix most problems.

i'd take his tent, nothing generally happens to the tents themselves at glastonbury

(unless you have some funny friends) a good place to camp if you're worried would be at the end of pennards by the railway track (saying that any side/corner of any field will do) then you have an easy way to get to it but its not constantly got people walking past around guy ropes and the like.

At the end of the day, your own tent has its bonus' to but i'd rather save the money to be honest.
