pinback
Why ? I have no desire to see the bands I listened to in the 80's playing at a festival in 09. If I had I'd go to Download and see Def Leppard and Whitesnake
Tugger2k
It wasn't in 2000.
pinback
again, any pure pop genre, synth based or not, is music for kids. it has nothing to do with the instrument used and everything about the reasons for making it. its not art, its money, pure and simple. the music has no artistic value in and of itself. Filthy
It's difficult to quantify "pure pop" though. I would say a lot of Tamla motown, Beach boys and Beatles were pure pop. Music for Kids, grownups etc. I'm not a great fan of PSB but to dismiss pop music wipes out an awful lot imo
Red Day
End of discussion because you have no knowledge of the genre you are rubbishing, just as I have no knowledge of the genre you are championing. To dismiss an entire genre as 'a very poor attempt at music' shows absolutely no knowledge of the vast amount of innovation and variance within that genre. I could say the same about British Heavy Metal but it would be meaningless because, like you, I wouldn't have the first clue about the genre I was slagging off. eFestivals
NWOBHM- New Wave of British Heavy Metal - Iron Maiden etc who were popular back in the 80's, but to clarify I don't have a mullet and cut off denim with a Motorhead badge on the back you youngsters know nothing. NWOBHM was coined by Sounds, in the late 70s, not eighties.
Tugger2k
Are the Pet Shop Boys' songs about prostitution, homelessness, AIDS, capitalism, homosexual repression, critiques of consumer culture and war for kids too?
pinback
yep, because their pop!! and nothing more!!
sifi
Whitesnake were not part of the NWOBHM. Def Leppard were, but they changed into a hair band after Pyromania. NWOBHM include for example Maiden, Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, Motorhead and, erm, Saxon. And Neil is right that the term was coined in the late 70s. tylerdurden
pinback you tease. i'd prefer new order or even duran duran to the petshop boys, simply because i dont have any petshop boys in my music library, i'm not gareth keenan. i think tugger means "manufactured pop" aswell, which, if the thing about them playing pre-recorded music and vocals is true, makes them not even a band imo. psouthern
Ive not read all this thread ITS BORING JUST LIKE THE PET SHOP BOYS & they deserve no place at glastonbury & as for those remarks about them being the 4th headlining in thier heyday (if they ever had one) did they headline their own shows. I think probably the support act was allways better
ig1234
The Pet Shop Boys don't deserve to play Glastonbury? You people are idiots. Even though they deserve it more than most for making intelligent, listenable pop music for decades, the Arctic Monkeys headlining proves anyone deserves to play... psouthern
I am not a fan of the Artic Monkeys but i slightly think they have made a far bigger contribution to music then music that your grandmother likes IE The Pet Shop Boys they was at best a band thats best forgotten like The Darkness Dollar , The Bay City Rollers ,Joe Dolce , Abba , Status Quo The list is endless They dont even make Radio 2 These days.
