How old are you? because you wouldn't be speaking like this if you were my age

A "chav" is a word made up by people young people to describe the scum bags gangster wannabes who make alot of young peoples lives hell.

Wether its them hanging outside my local chippy shouting abuse as people as they walk past or smoking weed and playing there shit music on the back of the bus in their gangs

Oh and dont forget the 'happy slapping' what went on few years back when i was at school

So ill look down on who i want mate

You dont seem to understand who were talking about when we say 'chav'

i agree too...his comments about it being bad looking down on people are entirely unjustified? What about paedos and stuff? Basically, i think that not all chavs are dickheads, not atall, and the word chav is just that , a word. But there are a big lot of people who go round beating up people for no reason and being disrespectful to everyone and call them what you want, i dont like them. Not because of the clothes they wear or the music they ilke or the background they are from, but of because what they are trying so hard to be and being general twats.

And Mardy, your not even UK based! How can you possibly know what 'they' are like?

not having a go =]

What I have found interesting about this thread, is that some of the younger posters seem to claim that their generation invented the word.

I know for a fact my other halfs family have been using the word for decades, as when it became fashionable to start using it (a couple of years ago) we had a big discussion on the use of the word.

In the town they come from (Maidstone) it has been used for many many years....

Where are you from mate? Im wanna know as you seem to have an extreme chav problem/infestation!!! You will probably find, the people that 'abuse' you and your obviously superior community, are a minority of these 'chavs'. If you took the time to speak to some chavs you would realise that they are as kind and normal as you and me!!! Well maybe just me by the sound of things!!! I know some very nasty Rockers and Sckaters, etc. A lot worse than the chavs i know!!!!!!!!

And that's the whole point about why some people are upset. Labels ARE dangerous and divisive when things get serious.

Of course you are right to have a go about those people who are essentially a menace to society. But it's their behaviour that makes them bad, not their clothes or the music that they like (which is where this thread started I think).

Papers like the Daily Mail will use labels like that to marginalise and demonise whole sections of society who they don't particularly like and that is dangerous. Replace every use of the word 'chav' in this thread with 'immigrant' or 'muslim' and you start to get the general idea. Everyone begins to get tarred with the same brush by the bad behaviour of some.

So I don't mind you having a go at the divs who just make trouble in fact I'm right with you. Just be very careful when you start using labels that thanks to our glorious press can end up having a much wider meaning. It then just becomes a way to divide us all, as this thread has shown.

and for those who havent dissapeared up their own politically correct backside, hope you enjoy these

What's the most confusing day of the year for a Chav?

Fathers Day!

How do you start an argument with a chav?

Speak!

What do you call a chav in a tastfully decorated house?

The burglar.

What do you call a Chav in a box?

Innit.

What do you call a Chav in a filing cabinet?

Sorted.

What do you call a Chav in a box with a lock on it?

Safe.

What do you call an Eskimo Chav?

Innuinnit.

Why are Chavs like slinkies?

They have no real use but it's great to watch one fall down a flight

of stairs.

What do you call a Chavette in a white tracksuit?

The bride.

What do you say to a chav at work?

Can i have a big mac please?

How do you identify the bride at a chav wedding?

She is the most pregnant one.

What do chavs use as protection during sex?

A bus shelter!

BTW, I am comfortable that I can dislike chavs AND not become a nazi!

Both + not all thugs are what are considered to be "chavs". My favorite example being Joey Barton

This all simply proves that the most accurate "label" for those that have put grief on people are thugs. The PC brigade have less issue with that

I think sometimes it can be partly the familys fault if they grow up in a family of thugs or dont teach their kids that thuggery is wrong. But i dont see how the family can be blamed any other way for that persons actions.

agreed. its hard to distinguish why there is more violence amongst teens these days, some say because of loss in family values, yet i think its just how people have evolved in the country, particularly because of education.

i think the education system has many flaws which leaves the younger generation less educated (despite apparently rising exam grades) - with my friend, i compared the skills i have to the skills that our parent's generation have and its obvious they have a lot of skills that we are ignorant to. a fair bit of the stuff that i was taught has done nothing for me in my adult life, despite the fact we technically have more qualifications than our parent's generation.

these days due to technology, people aren't having to do labourous jobs like coal mining or whatever, its all about sitting behind a desk and a computer a lot of the time. the jobs and skills that are required of us have changed, hence the change in the attitudes of different generations. i reckon anyway.

I think behaviour problems with teens has been rising since us teenage lads were stopped from being forced to go into the army. Guess you could say it turns you into a man and puts you on the right track.

Not that im saying i want to go into the army though

Would this topic get out of hand if we were all sat face to face round a fire up at the stones.

Or would it just be accepted as another person's point of view which is just as valid as everybody elses.

perhaps,

But, it is an undeniably strong argument that the breakdown of the traditional family is to blame for a lot of the problems in our youth
