metallimuse
We know that Metallica have a 30% stake in this new festival venture and to me it's becoming very apparent that they have a large say in how this festival is being handled/booked. Looking at the bands announced so far you have Avenged Sevenfold,Bullet For My Valentine,Mastodon,The Sword,Lamb of God and Machine Head who have all toured extensively with Metallica and you also have Alice in Chains who the band all love. Wouldn't surprise me to see HIM or Marilyn Manson end up on the bill somewhere, even if it's not the British leg. Anyone able to predict future additions by my reasoning? Do we think it's a good thing that Metallica seem to be hand picking the performers? After writing the first paragraph out i've actually just noticed Lar's being listed as a 'co-founder' of the festival on the Sonisphere website so he appears to be VERY much involved with the whole thing. jackthebassist
But the website says "Metallica's Co-founder Lars Ulrich" Think that just means he Co-Founded Metallica, not Sonisphere.

beLIEveR
It seems like Metallica have had a huge say in this year's event, but that makes sense to me. There aren't a lot of other bands who could persuade people to try out a new two day festival in the middle of nowhere*, especially in the middle of a credit crunch. Besides, if they have a percentage in the festival and it bombs (sales wise) it limits the loss somewhat. * Okay, not NOWHERE, but I wouldn't fancy trying to get there by public transport from say, 50 or 100 miles away. beLIEveR
All the fast trains into and out of London travelling via the east coast stop there.
BlackGarden
This I didn't know. I assumed it was like Apsley or Cheddington on the West Coast Mainline. Edited February 25, 2009 by BlackGarden
beLIEveR
In that case it's easier to get to Stevenage from Leeds, Newcastle or Sheffield than it is from Watford

t8yman
I havent seen any real proof that Metallica do own a stake in sonisphere. Nothing in kilimanjaros accounts suggests much, the only external link I can track is that one of the directors of Kili is also a director of Rockness Ltd. Last years accounts have not yet been published and the previous years accounts are pretty sparse to be honest. they should be about due for publication soon. I could believe that metallica have signed a 3 year exclusivity deal (not a 3 year playing deal) with sonisphere. as I can see them playing this year, not playing at all anywhere in europe next year (but still earning) and playing again the year after. metallimuse
I can't remember where i read that Metallica had a stake in the francise,i think it was on here somewhere. Does it not strike you as odd though that everyone announced has close links to Metallica other than Linkin Park and Thin Lizzy t8yman? beLIEveR
Agree about 3 year exclusivity rather than 3 year playing deal, that's far more likely.

r0w
Actually Thin Lizzy is one of James Hetfield - if not his favourite band of all time, so it makes sense they are in the lineup. Dunno about Linkin Park though

kipper64
Yeah i knew that but that to me doesn't qualify as a 'close link'.All the other's have toured extensively with Metallica.

scabbie
I agree with this theory, I think Metallica has had a lot to do with the line up. They probably did some deal along the way. I'm quite disappointed with the line up so far. I expected bigger bands (Muse, Foo Fighters etc) to be added to the line up, and more variety (i.e. not ALL heavy metal/thrash), which I thought would appeal more to my girlfried who is also coming. So we're getting two days, less bands, and not some of the bigger names the organisers have led us to believe would be on the bill. Shouldn't have bought a ticket so quickly.
