you do know that Santa Claus is an old Spector song that he does for a laugh at christmas time... don't you?

yup - I was singing it in a kiddie choir before he recorded it.

It'd be a hard song to make sound good in any sort of rock style. And he doesn't make it sound good.

My guess is, you probably won't be madly impressed, but why are you so worked up about the people who have seen him, and are very excited about him playing? He's no god, he's just good, for me and many others, the best at what he does.. which is putting on very exciting, passionate live shows.

He won't be coming on to a 5 minute pre-recorded climactic video.. he doesn't need to.

so you say. But as sifi just posted, "I wonder how he's going to go down in front of a festival crowd rather than his own partisan crowd." :(

It's simply the case that some acts just aren't good enough to work on anything but their own fans. I'm wondering if Bruce can.

Have you seen the clip of him playing to a non Bruce crowd on the Amnesty tour:

the crowd look quite happy

Where's the gig? America? Yeah, they're all Bruce neutral, eh?

Oasis are the only act I've seen not go down well at Glastonbury... but the performance they gave deserved it... I very much doubt it'll be same for Bruce

if that's the extremely low standard you're expecting him to beat then you're surely onto a winner. :D

But I though you (and all the Bruce obsessives) said he was the best live act ever? If he is, he can win over any crowd, and ALL of them. The real test will be the crowd when he plays - not the size of it, but whether it grows or shrinks as he plays. If it shrinks then he ain't doing it.

Why would the crowd "grow" ?? Surely anyone who is listening to him will already be in the crowd. He cant win over people who are somewhere else.

if people aren't being grabbed by it, they'll leave. New people will be wandering along as he plays (coming from other things which are happening with different start & end times) - if they like what they hear the crowd will grow.

This the standard way of measuring how a band is going down at a festival, where there's other things those people could be watching instead. It's actually a very accurate measure.

Who in your opinion is the best live act ever?

not a question I'm willing to answer. It's not me trying to tell people who is the best act ever.

Or are you just setting impossibly high standards for bruce springsteen because you're fed up with the bruce loving (which to be fair, have mostly come off the back of people saying stupid things like "he doesnt deserve to be at glasto).

nope, I'm not setting any different standard to that which efestivals has been using for nearly ten years to measure how an act is going down. If he holds the crowd or it grows then he's doing a good job - I'd say this for any band you can mention.

(edit: the only exception to that is for tented stages in the rain).

so what you want me to have as an example is another show, that was sold out, to people who didn't know he is on...

all I'm saying is that if they knew he was playing then it's not the non-partisan crowd you suggested it was. It's quite easy for any act to excite a crowd that's largely made up of fans.

You've surely noticed (at least I hope you have at your age) that a fantastic festival performance is far better than a fantastic performance to that act's own fans - the fact the act is winning people over who don't really know them in huge numbers makes it that bit better.

I have seen Bruce some 30+ times Live, and I can say with all honesty, that he is one of the most bland and boring performers out there.

He's probably going to only play stuff off his most recent couple of albums, which are not the most exciting in his career. I doubt there will be any time left for "greatest hits," so those not really familiar with his recent material, will find themselves regretting their decision to attend.

I encourage all of the doubters to skip his set, and hit up one of the other stages.

And this has nothing to do with any desire on my part, to get a better location on the field for his show. I just don't want anybody to be disappointed with having to endure 150 minutes of this has been, and his inexperienced backup band.
