Compulsory.

Newbie here. Sorry to crash the party (esp. to those who are festival stalwarts) but I hope you’ll forgive me.

Last year after a few beers with friends I asked my then 16 year old daughter what she wanted to do after her exams as a treat. She said ‘Glastonbury’. My friends thought it a great idea and I went along with because (I thought) we would never get tickets. We did of course and I have to say I was gutted. I love music and have always loved live music but camping, mud, long drops, etc were not for me.

Right up until the Wednesday morning when we left home I was dreading it. Brave smile for everyone to see but inside I was in turmoil. Yes I had now seen the lineup and was vaguely excited about seeing some of the bands but this was outweighed by all my doubts ( sorry - I know this makes me many peoples worst nightmare – someone with a ticket that does not want to be there!).

So what happened? Glastonbury happened! Once we had met up with our friends and started to pitch the tents I was hooked. Before a note was played, I was hooked. By the time Verve signed off on Sunday I knew exactly where I would be every year for 6 days in June. Why? In my case as a middle aged (but I am not old!) man, spending real quality time with my family and friends listening to great music in atmosphere I have never experienced before. 160,000 drunk, stoned or just high on life people that know how to party, are good humoured (always – I saw not one cross word let alone anything that came close to ‘trouble’), range for babes in arms to 80+ - it was incredible. British (in fact international) eccentricity in abundance. Then there was the music – nothing compares to a gig in a field!

So my word is ‘compulsory’. For me at least I will plan my year around it.

(a long first post – sorry)
