Reading Rock Festival?

Where's the rock? I mean I like a lot of bands, even some so-called 'indie' ones... But there is not one band I would call rock or heavier (punk, metal etc) on the rumours.. what's going on?

edit - Just seen Rise Against, thats it though..

Bill Oddie hell, the line up has yet to be announced, there WILL be rock on the line-up, it just hasn't been heavily rumoured. Neither has the dance tent, doesn't mean there wont be dance acts at the festival. There aren't many acts rumoured on the efestivals page, just the 3 headliners, kaiser chiefs and the bands playing the NME tour who always play.

Don't panic (yet)

mate theres only 11 bands rumoured for a festival with over a 100 acts it's a bit soon to be complaining about there being no rock present

this hole where's my metal/rock scenario is getting rather tedious now

sorry mate but i'm beginning to believe they've sounded the death knell for rock at reading and leeds. The fact that sonisphere has popped up in the same month means that more rock acts are going to be there, esp the way that gailbraith is signing even mid range bands up to exclusivity deals eg lamb of god and forcing other bands to pull out of appearancess regardless of what excuses they give (bullet for my valentine). Now we can only wait until download do exactly the same thing which will mean there's really not enough rock to go around. Thankfully i've got my ticket for both download and sonisphere, and will be saved from wading through the vast indie tripe at r/l in order to catch my favourite rock bands.

Enter Shikari are rumoured too.

But yeah, it's far too soon to judge. We have 10 rumours - 2 of which are heavy, 4 are the NME tour people who always play R1 Sunday anyway, and 3 are the headliners - of which there was barely any choice for FR, and certainly very few from the rockier type music (Could you see Slipknot or Def Leppard headlining Reading?).

It's just too early to crtiticize, I can see plenty of rockier bands being booked, albeit most will be lock-up I guess. I do hope the R1 tent sees a suitable set of bands to clash with the high indie bands for once.

IMO The industry is changing these are the first steps,

if you want to see rock dance or indie you will have to go to a festival dedicated to that genre

Prediction: becase there are new festivals poppin up all the time making it harder to sign the bigger acts, R/L will have no choice but to either start sharing headliners with other festivals or fall into the catergory of indie fests due to the high competition for Metal.

Metal acts will be faught over by Sonispehere ad Download R/L siply won't be able to compete.

Further: In years to come Glasto will be the only festival offering bands from both indie and metal the rest will be dedicated to metal dance or indie

A possible lack of metal at R/L this year will be down to the orgaisers stubborn attitudes refusing to share metal Headliners with the likes of Download

I think the lack of "rock" is a valid point and not at all a tedious topic. We're talking about headliners here - all 3 rumoured acts are not heavy by any means and will have an effect on how the rest of the main stage will shape up.

Yeah, the heavier bands will be announced to play the Lockup, but why should this kind of music be relegated to a smaller stage??

The real problem, more generally speaking, is that there's only one big stage. It wouldn't bother me if Iron Maiden headlined the lockup, it just simply couldn't happen for safety, logistical, egotistical and a million and one other reasons. At many other festivals the second stage is still big enough for the headliners to play on, and bands don't really care which of the two they're on.

By comparison, the second (and in many cases third and fourth) headliners at R/L are WAAAAY too big to play in the NME, never mind the lockup.

If you want variety then why do you always want there to be the same style of music at the festival? Don't get me wrong I can see your complaint the headliners do have quite a cross over audience (minus Radiohead as their audience is just full of people who like all kinds of music)but I think having a band like radiohead is more Varied than a band like AC/DC Radiohead are one of the most different bands I've ever heard so the ridiculous claim that they are in the same boat as KoL and Arctic monkeys is getting a little annoying. This will be my fourth year at leeds and I must agree... with out more metal bands it won't be the same.

my god, why is everyone moaning before a lineup has even been anounced?

most normal people choose a festival based on their lineup:

if you want indie you go to t in the park

if you want pop you go to the v festival

if you want an ecleptic mix of bands you go to glastonbury

if you want hard rock or metal you go to download

and if you want a cheaper 3 day alternative that always has a good mix of rock/indie you choose reading/leeds

i have never met heard such a bunch of pussy whipped idiots in my life, if you don't like the music on offer at a certain festival why the hell even contimplate going? go to one that fits your taste :P
