Bands that you knew before anyone else

So, we've all been there before. Suddenly your favorite unheard of band becomes massive and everybody worships them. You might get into some argument with someone over how most mainstream music is rubbish, and they come out with the old "well you like _______" argument.

Now comes the tricky part of convincing them that you knew them before anybody else did, dammit!

For me, this band was Pendulum. What was yours?

I remember Ben Harper introducing me to a fresh faced Jack Johnson after we'd done a live performance.

His exact words I believe were "This is Jack. One day he will be as famous, if not more, than me". Jack replied with a modest "Oh no, that will never happen blah blah blah".

Who was right. You decide!

Guillemots and The GO! Team were my first proper "Alternative" bands I really liked,

that was in year 8 and everyone thought I was weired because I liked that kind of music,

because it wasn't "Grunge" or "Metal". Now all those people are into kind of the same music

I'm into, rap and alternative. And everytime I go to them "have you heare of [insert group name

here]" They are just used to it and don't think any less of me, apart from they might get a bit pissed

off with me. Luckily I have founed people in school with the same music tastes, and my science teacher

aswell surprisingly shares the same music taste as me so everytime I've been to a gig before the lesson I say stuff Like "I saw [insert band name here] last night". But people do tend to get pissed off when I mention glasto, my maths teacher now just ignores me when I talk about it.

Cheers,

BlackHole2006

LostProphets, Bowling for Soup and Cajun Dance Party.

Saw the former 2 play at the cooperage pub in Plymouth when I was about 15, and discovered Cajun Dance Party... because of there name. :)

Seriously, one day I was fed up with listening to the same old stuff, so started randomly looking up unheard of bands on myspace and youtube and stuff, and spotted the name Cajun Dance Party, liked it, so looked them up, and adored them B)

I liked Arctic Monkeys before they became megastars as well... but I think everyone did really

Oasis

back in 93 a mate of mine was A&R'ing for sony. in the summer he started banging on about this band on creation that i had to listen to and in novemebr he got me in to the powerhaus to see them. cought them again at the 100 club in 94 where they really took off - amazing

completly blown away by it all. the arogance, the swagger. i loved them for 18months/ 2 years. i genuienly thought (at the time) they were the 2nd coming.

who knew they'd turn out to be a bunch of 1 trick pony chancers - breaks my heart to see how they are now. still exactly the same. it worked when they were coming up but now that arrogance and swagger just comes accross as smug and lazy.

Remember seeing Stereophonics supporting Kenickie (Lauren Laverne's old band) way back, thought they were alright then, and still quite like the first album, but other than that......

Also saw coldplay loads when they first came out. Supporting Muse once I think.

Arctic Monkeys. Saw em play Night and Day in Manchester as 3rd on the bill to a band called something like The Basement and just above The KBC. We knew I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor, Still Take You Home and Fake Tales only cos my mate had stumbled upon their myspace page whilst he was looking for another band with Monkey in their name. Met up with a mate who's proper clued up on new bands about 3 months later who said "you want to watch out for this band, they're called....". Felt so good pulling out the CD with all their demos on, most of which he hadn't even heard. Smug.

mine are really embarrassing. i went to see kaiser chiefs (whom i hate now) when i was about 14 cos they were the only gig that i could get into in nottingham.

and i heard of lily allen about 6 months before she first got played on radio 1 after randomly stumbling across her myspace.

i remember one of her songs getting played on the radio in the morning and i thought "where do i know that from? oh my god!"

the shame of it all

Not really before they were famous, they were on the cover of NME that week but I saw Verve just after Gravity Grave came out. Amazing gig.

I saw cornershop supporting Therapy? before they'd even learnt to play their instruments. Comfortably the worst support band I'd ever seen until I saw Max Tundra supporting Hot Chip recently.

Oh and managed to see Bluetones and Supergrass in a tiny venue in Canterbury before Alright and Slight return came out.

Ida Maria as well for me. Saw her support Good Shoes about a year and a half ago. Also saw Kaiser Chiefs support Ordinary Boys back in 2004. They were awful then and worse now.

dear god they were awful, how did they ever become successful cos i can't see they've improved any?

(ok, i know a lot of people will disagree but i know i'm not the only one to think that, loads of people in leics i know are embarrassed to be associated with em... )

Alabama 3 - saw them support Primal Scream before they'd released an album. What a night that was!

Asian Dub Foundation - saw them when they were an unsigned band

Lowline - gonna be big in 2009, if they ever release that album...

Keane - saw them 1st on a bill of four supporting The Thrills in a tiny venue in Aberdeen :)
