Bands that you knew before anyone else

I banged on to anyone who would listen about the Fratellis after I first heard Creeping Up The Backstairs, which only got a limited release at the time. Then saw then upstairs at the Birmingham Academy, and from thence in successively larger venues as they got better known. Bored of them now though.

Guillemots and The GO! Team were my first proper "Alternative" bands I really liked,

that was in year 8 and everyone thought I was weired because I liked that kind of music,

because it wasn't "Grunge" or "Metal". Now all those people are into kind of the same music

I'm into, rap and alternative. And everytime I go to them "have you heare of [insert group name

here]" They are just used to it and don't think any less of me, apart from they might get a bit pissed

off with me. Luckily I have founed people in school with the same music tastes, and my science teacher

aswell surprisingly shares the same music taste as me so everytime I've been to a gig before the lesson I say stuff Like "I saw [insert band name here] last night". But people do tend to get pissed off when I mention glasto, my maths teacher now just ignores me when I talk about it.

Cheers,

BlackHole2006

I'm slightly amused by this thread conceptually.

I heard of a lot of bands before anyone... that still no-one has heard of!

Anyone for a bit of Do Make Say Think?

Tragically, the serious one though for me is Jamie Cullum. I met him when he was playing jazz piano on a cruise ship. I remember asking him to play Misty for me, and he laughed and swore, but fair play, he did it well. He also played Straight, No Chaser when I asked. Nice kid - you wouldn't believe it now mind he seems well up himself!

Followed REM since 1984/85. circa Reckoning.

When I reached 6th Form (87 - 88) told anyone who listened they would be one of the biggest bands on the planet to widespread derision.

Needless to say I was proved right and those who mocked became the lighter in the air crowd at Stadium gigs in the 90's

Surely you can only claim to not like mainstream music if it never becomes popular? Liking it before it's mainstream doesn't mean you don't like mainstream music - it just means you are quicker at finding mainstream music than other people.

You can only claim not to like mainstream music if stuff you like never becomes popular. Of course then you'll never know whether you are actually superior or whether it's actually that your taste in music is crap.

The main claims to fame I can manage are seeing Radiohead at the Fleece and Firkin pub in Bristol for £3.50 (also saw them a fair few times at the Anson Rooms which holds a couple of hundred), and, slightly less impressively, I've seen both Keane and The Wombats at the Louisiana (pub, holds less than 100 people).

The flipside of this is that may mate was rattling on about yet another great new band he'd read about in the NME and, in a pre Myspace, age we all told him to shut up. Hence I missed out on seeing Oasis at the Fleece and Firkin.

Muse, played with them in the Cavern in Exeter, and used to work with the bass player (albeit briefly). And perhaps much more tragically also saw Ocean Colour Scene in the Cavern, our drummer was really into them.

Got into Radiohead pretty early on, I remember everyone telling me they were crap, then Creep came out...

I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.

I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."

I was there.

The Zutons, Wombats. Soft Toy Emergency as they're from around here. Was listening to Pendulum early 2007 and people have just recently cottoned on and now they're total shit.

Seen Ting Tings supporting Reverend and the Makers in 07 too. Have loved KOL since Aha Shake Heartbeat and when I heard The Bucket on MTV2 about 5 years ago.

The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Happy Mondays, Charlatans - got to know them through strolling around Affleks Palace when I was a kid.

The little shops used to play the very first demos on cassettes given to them by an independant record shop called Vinyl Exchange across the road.
