Have Coldplay done the UK leg of the Viva tour yet? Caught them in Brisbane 3 weeks ago and to be honest I cant get the show out of my head as it was one of the best things I have ever seen on stage! Have been playing Viva and Prospekts pretty much on loop since then and really hoping they'll be playing and if they dont this year then they will absolutely play next year...its pretty much a very gone thing surely. They were pretty fookin huge in 05 and they got the Saturday headline...now they are very much in the world Top 5 of acts as far as the media is concerned currently.

Chris is not the black marker pen on hand, sat at piano whinging bloke he was in 05 these days. The entire band are putting on one of the best coordinated, colourful and lively shows without resorting to lipsynching and wearing leotards (see Madge/Britney)!

Have a proper listen to Viva and Prospekts EP in all it's Eno glory, sit and appreciate. I have never owned any other Coldplay album cos I considered them v dull (especially X&Y) but this new direction is very interesting and the future will only see them get better and better!

Well I would be over the moon if they are playing. However, if they are not I have tickets to see them in September. Forgot about the letter Chris Martin wrote to the council back in 2002. But I remember reading it online some where and yes Glastonbury is in his heart.

People think they are shit other like them. I think loads of bands are shit its a fact of life, but if we all liked the same thing the world would be boring AND Glastonbury would have one stage.

So if they are there see them if you like them, stay away if you don't, if you have nothing doing go and see them I honestly think you will be surprised.

...yep, I've seen Coldplay on this tour and can confirm that they are indeed on good form...slightly contrived (well, it is coldplay), but nonetheless I really enjoyed the show (wasn't into the viva la vida audience participation, Arcade Fire by numbers, but otherwise it was good)...For the record, everybody on here in '05 insisted they wouldn't be seen dead at the pyramid when they were on, as did everybody I talked to on wed/thurs/fri night at the festie....come saturday night though half the bloody festival was there! (as was I)...it's just cooler to say you don't like them. Viva la vida is a good album, not as revolutionary as it might be made out to be (or the clothing worn by the band  ), but at least it's a departure from the piano-driven wallowing that permeated previous efforts (X&Y, Q magazine's album of the year in '05...same year as Funeral, Illinois and I'm wide awake it's morning FFS!)....anyway, if they play they'll be good and about 100,000 other people will watch them and probably agree....if you don't like em, go and see the stuffies!

I saw them in 2005 with my gang. I was the one most looking forward to it, the others were take-or-leave. I quite enjoyed them, but my mates were raving about it - one said it was the best gig he'd ever seen.

Maybe partly the "Pyramid-at-night" effect (sounds probs aside, it *is* quite a sight), but still.

They're deeply uncool, and like most perhaps I think the newer stuff won't reach classic status, but the big tracks are fun enough for many people, and are indeed written - maybe cynically - to play to the stadium ambience.

If they're still a possible come the night, I'll pop along just in case.

(I note we seem to be in a temporary "Coldplay Appreciation Safety Area". A phenomenon on the internet that is very rare. It'll pass soon enough. )

Well said...

I saw their 3 previous Glasto appearances and I wasn't overly impressed (t'were okay) but I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago and they were fantastic! Apart from the Stones, maybe REM and one or 2 others, this Viva tour is the best "big" touring show in years.

I does annoy me that people constantly slate Coldplay. Similarly to Damien Rice, people listen to 2 tracks off of an album, judge it, think it's a bit slow/soppy/wet etc then preach to people who know an awful lot more about this stuff than they do. Despite their often slow and polished albums they put on a good, lively, often quite heavy, 90 minute rock show which 90% of the audience can sing along to 90% of the material and for a festival headliner you cannot ask for more and you would really struggle to find anyone more suitable. If you've not seen the latest tour then please don't comment.

However LL, I have to disagree about Chris Martin, he still makes me squirm and feel embarrassment just watching him.

To all the "haters": So many 4th Headliner threads but other than Coldplay, does anybody have a single other sensible suggestion for the pre-Springsteen slot?

-Someone with a back catalogue of current(ish), TV friendly, non-fanbase friendly hits that could engage a crowd for at least an hour?

-Someone who is affordable (bearing in mind the current conformations/rumours/proposals don't look cheap and Coldplay are likely to do "mates rates").

-Someone big enough to be considered as a Co-Headliner with the Boss

-Someone who is considered modern enough to balance against the "oldie-heavy" bill in it's current form (say what you want, I have a degree in music and this latest album 100% really does cross into some new/contemporary territory for a pop record)

-Someone that is not too radical sounding that they will stand out like someone with a job and money will do in a years time.

Other than that t*ss*r from Exeter and his 3 dull, unknown mates "X&Y (and maybe Z??)" no one else can fit this slot, certainly not after all the build up.

For an intended surprise guest to please 100,000 people who will have differing musical tastes, it has to be someone with pop credentials.

Coldplay are the biggest, best, most credible and festival suited Pop Band around at the moment so all this hate for them on here just comes across as totally ignorant, pretentious, dumb, unfounded, and it just proves you do not have a clue what you are talking about when it comes to large-scale performance/event organisation.

Just except that you are wrong and Coldplay are the best possible act to fill Michael's slot (rather them than me).

If you still totally disagree, then I genuinely hope you have a great time in the Dance Village watching some washed up 50 year old, drug addict, raver playing records to some clueless pilled up, white gloved teenagers. The rest of us will be enjoying a highly acclaimed, major act doing a show of such a high scale and quality that it will be a very rare treat. With years of preparation and planning, millions pumped into it and some of the biggest names in music and entertainment behind it, a tour and a band that are so successful that literally the whole of the world views it as the biggest and best act in years but no... a few d*ckheads on here who heard a couple of their singles on Radio 2 are far more likely to know what should be on the Pyramid... I thank you!

Hmmm, a well put together pro-Coldplay argument (however you still havent convinced me, they're still dull as ditchwater IMO).

My point is you somehow ruined your piece by adding your own bit of hatred levelled towards the Dance Villagars, I may be wrong but I'm sure you've offended some non-drug using unwashed out hard core dance fans out there.

Thank you... I think, LOL.

It would be hypocritical of me to comment on drugs and what not, and my favorite performer of all time is Mick Jagger so that defeats my point even further.

So really... It's not hatred. Just disbelief that anybody would choose a DJ (be they young/old an alcoholic/priest) over a major act/performance whether it's Coldplay, Kylie, Rolling Stones, Wacko or a major dance act like Faithless or the Prodigy. You can see club type/DJ performances in any city centre any weekend of the year.

While it is true that Glasto is not all about the qualtity of the Pyramid Headliners etc, Glasto IS 100% about the community spirit, something that seems to have got a bit lost over the years. 100,000+ people, standing in a field, covered in piss, mud and hippy juice (cider), hugging strangers, dancing and singing along to Born In The USA in a Westcountry accent. Now that sounds to me like my idea of "Michael's Garden Party" (a phrase I coined...)

I do not mean to offend anyone but those who choose a DJ over any Pyramid Headliner???? Really???? At midnight on Saturday when the Dance Village is packed with people who have chosen to watch records spin in a booming tent, would I really offend even a single person there by suggesting their pupils looked a bit dialated?

The Milkybars are on me!
