Anyone like the lineup?

I think the three headliners are solid, especially Radiohead, who are a major catch and I can't think of that many bigger/more acclaimed bands around right now - definitely on par with, or above any other Reading Sunday headliner in recent years. Definitely no Franz Ferdinand/Razorlight/Darkness headline-clangers.

Two of the second-headliners put a dampener on the rest of the main-stage lineup - Kaiser Chiefs who are pretty inoffensive but hardly anyone's favourite band, and same for Bloc Party. Was hoping for some more international legendaryness here, eg. Weezer below Radiohead and Offspring below Kings.

(anyone know if this could still happen? or are they definitely the top bands for each day?)

I'm well pleased with the line up. First time EVER I'll be seeing all three headliners (this will be my 6th festival). Decided I couldn't afford it this year until I found out Radiohead may play, now I have a nearly maxed out overdraft... oh well.

As for the rest, I'll definitely be seeing The Prodigy, Maximo Park, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend on the main stage and hopefully White Lies and Friendly Fires in the NME Tent. I'm a bit dissapointed Bloc Party are playing again, regret buying a ticket for them in October now. Oh and The Maccabees are back and they're probably my favourite band ever so they will definitely be a highlight for me.

I think its a wonderful wonderful lineup. I would pay to see al the headliners where last year I would of paid for one. with that you got placebo, ian brown, prodigy, florence and the machine, white lies, deftones, block part and yyy I am one happy bunny.

I think it is a brilliant lineup and was there was me scared I was just going to go for radiohead.

yipee!

I love it how everyone who calls the moaners closed minded says the only headliner they would have watched last year are the Killers. Yeah, because I've never had the opportunity to see them before...

Anyway, I can't be bothered to edit this so I'll simply paste it:

Sticking to facts:

Out of the nine top three bands, seven have played at least once in the last three years:

Arctic Monkeys (top three last time they played)

Kings of Leon (top three last time they played)

Kaiser Chiefs (top three last time they played)

Placebo (top three last time they played)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs (top three last time they played)

You may be beginning to spot a pattern. But don't worry, the facts do change slightly for the next two:

Bloc Party- SECOND TOP TWO F***ING YEARS IN A ROW!?! AND THIRD THE YEAR BEFORE THAT!?!

Maximo Park- 4th last time they played. Slightly better, I hear you say? Well... they also headlined the NME in 2006, making this their third high profile appearance in four years.

To be fair, there are two other bands, Radiohead and The Prodigy. However, the latter aren't even an English festival exclusive, courtesy of a Download appearance. What's more, they're lower down the bill at Download than Reading. That might be down to musical tastes, but in my mind that still leaves some questions. Can't fault Radiohead, amazing acquisition (and I presume they're exclusive), but only one band to be excited about so far. However good that band is, for £180ish that has to go down as a slow start.

Continuing the uncharacteristically positive tone, Deftones is an exciting mid mainstage booking, and given that The Stone Roses won't be back anytime soon, I suppose Ian Brown falls into that category as well. So credit where credit is due to FR for those two.

I understand that further down the bill it's slightly more acceptable to have a little bit of repetition. Still, for the first announcement I'm disappointed to see another four or five who've graced the various stages in the last few years. In my opinion recent bands being announced on opening day should be kept to an absolute minimum (unless they're making a big jump up the bill, like Glasvegas). I'm not saying they should automatically not be booked, but the whole idea of the first announcement is to get us excited about bands we haven't seen for a while. Particular gripes:

Vampire Weekend- played last year high on NME. Understandable to see them again and higher up, but it would have made more sense to slip them in a subsequent announcement.

Fall Out Boy- third appearance in four years on the main stage.

Eagles of Death Metal- third appearance in four years (for balance, one of those was in the Carling Tent, but it's still a lazy booking).

Continuing in the strictly factual tradition, the R1/NME headliners have provided something alternative in recent years. This year is no exception- I can't deny that Glasvegas and Gossip provide something alternative to any of the headliners. But I'm sorry, I don't care what your taste in music, in terms of broad appeal neither have anything on Babyshambles, MSP, BFMV or Pendulum, an argument that based on last year's crowd could probably be stretched as far as LTJ and Gallows. Frankly I don't see any possibility of either of them clashing with Radiohead, meaning that if there are two exciting R1 headliners to come, one of them is guaranteed to clash with one of the three mainstage bands I've acknowledged as impressive acts.

So, assuming that the Special Guests and the NME headliner who doesn't clash with Radiohead are amazing, that's five bands who truly fall into the "must not miss" category, and even then it's assumed that you like all five.

Which I don't.

EDIT: I don't think I gave Bloc Party enough of a hammering first time around.

I'v not been to reading yet - but according to friends (mine, not the american sitcom) every year one of the bands has a longer set - I assume this year it will be Radiohead ?

The sheer size of their back catalogue and their legendary status says it should rightfully be them, but does anyone know anything different ?

Also, Cure to headline NME tent ? No chance !

i dont really see your point?

festivals always book that way, there always a circa of say 2 to 3 years.

Its all personal taste and alot of the bands I love and like ive said the headliners are alot better than last year which is what festivals like reading/leeds gets sold on.

I think this years headliners are infinitely better, last year I didn't want to see any. this year all 3. Metallica I'd seen in 2003 and although they were quite good, they're not really my thing. RATM are an ok band but I never listen to them at home so didn't jump on the bandwagon like everyone else. Killers are just rubbish.

Wow, Seriously? How many have you been too? You don't think RATM,Killers and Tallica, Are slighty better than this years?

Or even the past few years where the bands have been amazing. There is like 2-3 stand out bands this year compared to atleast a dozen over the past few years.
