Tugger2k
I'm not entirely sure what the main arguments against proportional representation are. I assume it's mainly cost and effort? Edited April 2, 2009 by Tugger2k

bombfrog
From what I can remember from GSCE Politics , it is in neither Labour or Conservatives interest to move to PR , they would do the proverbial shoot in foot, so we will always stick with first past the post. I could be wrong tho !
jameshunt
What percentage of people that work in banks do you think are paid large bonuses and what percentage of people that work in banks do you think go to work in the morning with the intention of taking money from people's pension funds? Actually, as your clearly an expert on the inner workings of the banks and macro economics in general then perhaps you could furnish us with an explanation of exactly what the cause of this recession is and exactly who the protesters should be making the target of their anger. Then, perhaps you could tell them.

I can tell you one of the main reasons for this recession. Greed and creative accounting ! Bonuses's etc were paid immediately on products that were often long term. Its OK a shop having a good month and selling loads of plasma tv's , but if the cheques bounce , they have had all those costs to pay and no money to show for it ! llcoolphil
They're standing up for what they believe is right. We've all got opinions but some of us go about expressing them in more appropriate ways.
llcoolphil
I think the point bomfrog was making that you've missed completely is that you're not living in a 3rd world country or somewhere where politicians are truly corrupt (e.g. north korea). Oh no, your pension is knackered, well I bet that's a big consolation to people that don't even have access to clean water or shelter. llcoolphil
Completely right. I do wish I lived in an area that had a seat that is vaguely contested though it's a straight conservative stronghold.

ig1234
Completely agree with the above. The police had the tenacity to say they had cut off the Climate Camp for the safety of the public and those inside. Well the only people with bloody pouring from their heads appeared after the police stepped up. The place only became a bit more chaotic, but still peaceful, when they did that. The riots didn't exist outside the camp (away from the Bank), until the police blocked us in. Many of us spent 5 hours trying to leave. I had to get a train at 9, I didn't get out until midnight (where's the logic in letting people you think will cause trouble out when they have nowhere to go, whereas they could have been let out when they could go home? Maybe a certain Metropolitan Police/major wanted things to kick off to justify themselves...). Others dropped in after work and got stuck, f**king their next day up. Others missed work that evening risking the sack. Members of the public got trapped in there too that had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CAMP. All in all, the camp was excellent, and very Glasto-ey though. Good food, good atmosphere, good music, good message. Good tents.

krisskross
I just read that a man died outside the bank of england "Many people had gathered outside the bank in support of a man who died in the protests on Wednesday evening. Police confirmed the circumstances behind the death have been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). Scotland Yard said he had collapsed near the Bank of England and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. City of London police named him as Ian Tomlinson, 47, and said he was on his way home from working at a newsagents at the time. " http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7978105.stm This is unbelievable. How has this not been talked about far more - or have i just been out of the loop... edit: or was it unrelated? I'm assuming he was inside the police box and not allowed to leave.. bombfrog
Its not been talked about more because the police are trying to cover it up by laying the blame at the feet of protesters

MJ2000`
from a selfish point of view...has anyone benefitted from the recession....I know I have with my newly acquired tracker mortgage. My payments are hlaf of they were projected.....almost free borrowing! Clearly the sensible thing is to now overpay to reduce my mortgage in time for when the rates go up...
