Sonic Youth

... the last NME/Radio One headliner?

They fit the bill for the 'long awaited American rock band', and openly stated earlier in the year that they wanted to play some English festivals. In said announcement, however, they did mention Glastonbury, but I would've thought that's had its major announcements by now?

The reason they haven't been announced yet might be because they were recently confirmed for ATP in December. I know the 'special guests' slots on the main stage are usually bands with contracts to other festivals, so this might be a similar deal (as ATP would look a lot less tempting if one of its leading features was playing at another festival a few months prior). This might be why we haven't heard any news on the third headliner by FR (they're waiting for ATP to shift more tickets), and why they're instead moving on to the lock-up announcements early to take away focus from it.

Talk about clutching at straws, huh?

Everyone says 'i don't think there's the audience for them a reading' but i beg to differ.

Have you seen the amount Indie kids that walk around with the oh so fashionable Goo tshirts from Urban Outfitters?

Half of the idiots that wear those tshirts probably don't have a clue who Sonic Youth are but would go and see them for the name alone.

(I said the same about rage. For some reason all my friends wanted to see them last year and were all like 'oh rage are legends man, never thought i would ever get to see them' yet i'd never heard any of them mention rage before the line-up was announced..)

Sonic Youth would have "the rage effect" of people pretending they're huge fans, mostly because of the T-shirts... I do have one of those though, but I didn't get it from urban outfitters, they ruined a really nice t-shirt!

In regards to rock/alternative music and from an artistic point of view I really think you could make a very strong argument that Sonic Youth are the 'best band ever' through the sheer quality and quantity of the music they have released or been involved in.
