Has Glastonbury Sold Out?

Orange will charge your phone for £0 - a "service" to festy goers, but they aren't a charity - they have to pay for the kit, the staff and the space - so there has to be a payoff, somehow. Its to Micheal Eavis's credit he has these arrangements in place in a (relatively) subtle way - meaning the site still looks , on the whole, like the worlds biggest party -which of course, it is.

beodeejay, good post.

Having been a Cockmill Meadow customer of Street Sub Aqua for quite a few years, I can testify they run a great operation. The volunteer staff are always friendly, the breakfast stuff is great, and boy do they work their butts off during the morning rush. As a result they make an absolute stack of cash for the club, but it's money that goes to benefit a community thing rather than Any Event We Don't Care Burger Van Ltd.

There's a fine line. In 2007 I saw Madness play at the Casino. Outside they had a tv screen so that we could see the band. Every so often they flashed up adverts for match.com which caused a lot of booing (which had suggs confused!) Aside from that incident, I think they are firmly on the correct side of the line.

Seriously? That's both funny and sad at the same time. If they're gonna' advertise at all, I would have hoped match.com's marketing department would be a bit more inventive than that; free packs of match.com condoms perhaps? <_<

Re-reading this thread reminds me I've not grumbed about burger vans for a while....

Glad there is general agreement the festival is just being realistic by taking a few corparate coins.

Now then ....burger, chicken & chips, ice cream vans etc.......

Would anyone else like to see them gone ?

I'm not being a foodie snob (otherwise I would't take pot noodles with me, for the buy one/make one meal policy!! )

Its just...they stick out as being expensive and generally a bit crap. Tea & coffee is the lowest quality yet the highest price on site. £1:50 for a teaspoon of no-brand instant coffee or a cheapie tea bag and some hot water !! mad....especially when there is loads of freshly brewed, nice stuff all over the site.

Fair enough some will say, its just supply and demand. But... each time I see a half eaten tray of scraggy old chicken & frozen chips on top of a bin, I cant help thinking WHY :) ?? Same goes for the other ingredients I assume -although it was probably 1995 since I last used one - since then, I've always managed to stagger an extra 100 yards or so, doubling the quality and halving the bill.

They are only on the main drags - next to the big stages, and I think they kind of prey on the younger, (or lazier) punters who just want something quick then back into the fray. My sister in law is their prime target - despite herself, she just gets drawn to them. And the ice cream vans.....worst of all, she usually grumbles its not nice.....then I grumble she bought a can of coke for £1:50 !! or 500ml of water  .....etc etc

Given the festival insists on some restrictions - paper plates, wooden cutlery, it would be nice if they could either up the quality or edge them out somehow.........god, I sound like Victor Meldrew...

But perhaps it could work as reverse psychology? You get home after the weekend and empty out your goodie bag only to find your match.com condoms, still in the cellophane. What a cruel reminder that you didn't get any! All of a sudden you're imaging how much more sentimental those memories might be if you were sharing them with your soul mate . . . step in match.com!

Ah never though of that, you're good!

Reminds me of he joke about the spotty young lad that takes his pack of 3 back to the chemist. "See that" he says pointing to the sell by date. Shop keeper says, "2012 So?". How am I supposed to use all those before then he replies.

Groan! I'll get me coat!

There's another joke about the guy who went into the chemists and they told him "we are sold out, have you tried Boots?" He said "yes but they keep slipping off". But that joke is just about as bad so I won't tell it :P

Excellent posts from beodeejay by the way, I'm a similarly 'experienced' veteran to him (his year will be my 14th) and I agree that while Glastonbury has changed and evolved over the years, sponsorship has been kept within acceptable limits. I'd rather it was possible for there to be less, but the balance we have now still keeps on the right side of a difficult line. IMO like.
