I've never been into dance, so i missed out on the Dance Village a bit last year. I'm going to give it more of a shot this year though.

What do the DJs actually do? Play a popular track and put their own beats and stuff over the top of it? Occassionally shout "shabba"? Play it slower and faster now and again? To be honest, i don't see the appeal but i will give the dance village a chance this year. Who knows, it might get me hooked!

So who should I look out for at the Dance village? I love dance music, particulary Techno, Electro and a bit of D 'n' B just not that familar with names as I don't really listen to much in my room or on ipod, just save it for clubs or parties.

Names I am familar with are Layo & Bush...., 2 Many DJs, Timo Maas, Crookers, Yoda, London Elecktricity.

What are this Hybrid like? Anybody else got any recommendations?

You need to match the beat... which involves altering the speed on one or more turntables to get the tracks in sync.

I'd argue that an average DJ won't play what's popular or what people want to hear... they dictate what you like. And only the worst DJs ever act as MC as well. So no shouting "shabba" or whatever.

yeah, i went to a band gig for the first time in a while the other day and it seemed really weird having breaks between the songs. i'm in a band and we always try to keep it flowing all the way through.

DJing is an art. TBH i think theres more skill in DJing, although it obviously depends on the individual case. LOVE IT!!!

Posted this on the Rockness forum a while back.....

If you think DJs play the same thing you need an education, here's some styles for you.....

Ambient(+Sub Genres*SG*)

Breakbeat(+SG)

Disco(+SG)

Downtempo(+SG)

Electro(+SG)

Electronica(+SG)

Garage(+SG)

Hardcore(+SG)

House(+SG)

Industrial(+SG)

Jungle/Drum'n'Bass(+SG)

Techno(+SG)

Trance(+SG)

Psychedelic Trance/Goa Trance(+SG)

Nu Rave(+SG)

Chiptune(+SG)

Oldskool Jungle(+SG)

.....forgetting all the dance type bands(Soulwax, Hadouken, New Order? etc) and remembering some of the acts will play 'live' sets. Same thing my ass! Leave your brain cells at home or are you just too lazy to listen to other stuff and just band it all together. I hope it's the latter.

i dont think theres more skill to Djing, but like you said it depends on the person. i've been djing for around 8 months and played out at quite a few clubs in bristol but never had the patience to learn piano or bass. just sucked at them, but djing i can do

dont know about hybrid but check out stanton warriors, skream, caspa and carl cox....oh and scratch perverts
