Does anyone do a job where you have to be smart and presentable

I got home one Friday about 7 years ago, suited and booted, after yet another week away from home as a freelance software engineer and realised that I was living to work rather that working to live. Jacked it in and set up a business in a completely different trade.

I now dress how I like, have no idiot "Human Resources" sticking their nose into my life, employ only one idiot manager (me) and really enjoy life. I might be skint but by god life is so much more pleasant. Best move I ever made.

How blatantly do you want to tell us you earn over 150k?

In theory I work in a "creative industry" and can wear what I like... in truth I couldn't dress how I do for festivals (or have my hair as I do) because I have clients and have to go to pitches and meetings - and I also travel a lot to countries like Brazil and China which aren't too keen on hippies!

So, I have a rather schizophrenic wardrobe with some smart, corporatey type clothes, some dress down jeans and tops - and then more festival like gear including wings and things. One of the reasons I love fesitvals is that I feel I can be the real me...

come to think of it though the wardrobe rather reflects my split personality :(

I work in a College so can wear what I want really. We've just got to look presentable. If anyone came in wearing a shirt we'd preume they've got a job interview, or are due in court!

I usually wear black straight legged trousers or jeans and any top that I want. I often get mistaken for a student so I don't mind.

I also don't brush my hair EVERY morning. I can often get away with not touching it for 3 days. I even get compliments when it's particularly wavy. I pretend I style it like it's bed head, when really, it is just that! (I do shower every morning though, i'm not a complete skank!)

I don't even think any students here are going to Glastonbury. In the 2 years I've worked here, i've only met 2 students who've been to Leeds Festival and that's it!

For many years I worked as a journalist which meant that every day I wore a suit and tie as you never knew where you might have to go or who you might be meeting and had to wear clothing that was appropriate for all eventualities.

When I quit that and moved into my second career running a company that supplied specialist communications software to the news industry I had to wear a suit and tie just for important meetings and the rest of the time in the office it was casual.

When I quit that and moved into my third existence as a freelance tutor and trainer I set myself a rule that I would never again consider any work that required either a suit or tie. I've stuck to that and now the only times I put on a tie are for weddings or funerals.

I still scrub up and wear smart casual but no tie.

However my festival wear is different again. More flamboyant and colourful - or practical. Pretty well everything has secure zip or buttoned pockets.

Glasto allows you to be someone else again - possibly the person you'd like to be most of the time. My friend who's a director of social services swaps his suit for his death's head T shirt.
